| 1994 Ford 1994 Ford Explorer |
| make | Ford | | model | 1994 Ford Explorer | | year | 1994 | | what | I have a 1994 Ford Explorer which has an intermittent starting problem. Sometimes when I turn the key to the start position nothing happens. All the proper lights go on in the dash but the starter motor does not turn over.
When this happens I sometimes hold the key in the start position and then the car starts right up. Other times I have to let the key go back to run and try the start position numerous times before the motor fires up.
When it does start there is no hesitation, it fires right up.
I suspect the actual ignition switch itself.
I have been told there are points inside it and after many years the points get corroded.
My question is: can I replace the ignition switch itself without removing the key cylinder?
Looking at the manual it appears that if I remover the steering wheel, the upper and lower covers, and nothing else; that I can remove and replace the switch.
Am I correct?
