1970 Ford Bronco Other - Engine

Question: Recently helped friend install remanufactured long block 302. Distributor will not fully seat - about 1/4 inch high (O Ring is visible). Measurements indicate distributor shaft is fully engaged on the oil pump shaft. Appears that the shaft needs to be shorter or somehow seated further into the oil pump. Plan to drop the oil pan, and remove the oil pump for inspection. Any thoughts on what the problem may be?

Technican: The problem is that your oil pump shaft is not seating onto the oil pump shaft. Your problem is that you have the cam gear aligned between the distributor and the cam and also the bottom of the distributor to the oil pump. The oil pump is driven by the distributor. The easiest way to do this is time the distributor to the cam and apply some downward pressure to the distibutor while turning the crankshaft over. This should align the oil pump drive to the distributor and let it drop into proper position. Once the distributor is in proper position verify your timing is still correct. . Al
Owner: Thanks Al for your input; however, I had terminated this contract earlier this morning prior to your response. Anyway, before dropping the pan I pulled the new (reman) distributor and inspected the shaft socket. I found a lot of crud in there which was a surprise given we had just bought it last weekend. Cleaning it out allowed the distributor to completely seat on the shaft, and all is well. No one thought of this possibility, but I guess we live and learn! Rick
Technican: Glad it worked out.. Al
