1991 Ford Escort Lagging - Engine

Question: 91 escort GT 1.8 manual I have had this car for 4 months. When I first got it I replaced the EGO sensor(the wire was broke off), spark plugs, roter, cap and wires. It ran fine except when starting you had to crank it over more than normal. It did this before I bought the car. The car ran fine so I left it alone. 2 days ago, when I left for work I noticed It was pinging. As soon as you give it gas it pings, even at idle when you blip the throttle. At about 3000 rpm up it has no power. The idle is a little rough too. It also ran very hot on the highway. When I got home, I checked the timing(right on the money)-ran a compresion test(all with in 5pnds of 175pnds and no leak down) and replaced fuel filter. I have a fuel pressure gauge But there is no schrader fitting and no rubber hose for a tee fitting. I grounded fuel pump on the data link and the pump is working. I also looked for vacumn leaks-Nothing. I pulled the spark plugs and they are white with tiny brown spots- Lean? I ran diagnostics, and it gave me a 02-No crankshaft pin sensor signal And 15-EGOS voltage stays below.55volts (lean). Since the sensor is in the distributer, I replaced it, cleared the codes and it still runs the same. I ran another diagnstic and have no trouble codes? At this point I don't know what to do next. Any information you could offer would be Great. Thank you for your time!

Technican: Yes the blistering white appearance of the plugs is a sure sign of a lean mixture. Does your engine come with a maf (mass airflow sensor) or a map sensor? Annother possibility is plugged injectors. When you say it ran hot on the freeway, do you mean the engine coolant was hot perhaps on the verge of overheating?
Owner: it has a VAF meter vane airflow meter. the temp gauge was almost maxed.
Owner: Fuel pressure with car not running was 36 psi running it was 32 psi. I replaced the thermostat even though it was ok, also did a presure check on the cooling system all fine. Water pump is about a 1 yr old(thats what the orignal owner said)and belt tension was fine. I went ahead and pulled the catalitic converter off and bolted on a new one (for my boys car -same kind different year).Nothing changed.....Where do I go from here? I took the car to a couple differant parts stores, but neither had the right adapter to run diagnostics. If I take it to a well known shop for a diagnostics check (100.00$), will it show more codes than what I get running a diagnostics? Thx
Technican: Don't allow the car to run that hot again, but I think you already know this. It appears you may have more than one problem. You really need to find out what the fuel pressure is. At least try to see if the pump is capable of producing minimum pressure. You can do this by hooking your fuel pressure gauge to the fuel filter (plug one end of the tee and connect other end to filter). Power up the pump and see what you get. Follow safety precautions when working with gasoline. Check to see that the thermostat is working and coolant is full.
Owner: I took the injecter rail off to check the injecters. the injecters look brand new. the rubber fuel hose has a plastic liner in them that are fused to the tubing and fittings. I am going to fab a tee using an old fuel filter to check the fuel pressure, and go from there.
Technican: Let me know the results.
Technican: It won't show any additional codes. You will need to find out more details of the diagnostic check they perform. If they just glance at the engine and scan for codes forget about them. You have done this yourself and will gain nothing. If they use a scanner to monitor live sensor data and have an experienced driveability specialist view the data then it will be helpful in diagnosis. Have you check the maf sensor? If you are handy with a multimeter (volt/ohm) you can check many of the sensors yourself. A scanner is best then you know exactly what the computer is seeing (which also tests the integrity of the circuit from the computer to the sensor).
Owner: Yesterday, I pulled the upper timing belt cover off and I found my problem. The cam gear without the distbuter had jumped a tooth. That is why all the timing marks lined Up. Thats a first for me. Replaced belt and back on the road. That one made the top ten, What the #&!!? Tensioner was in bad shape. The service you offer is a great idea! Only question i have is since this was such a weird problem and i was able to figure it out, do I still owe you the $40.00.
