Question: The check engine light comes on and off....and the idle is irregular from time to time. I was thinking maybe the O2 sensor, what do you think?

Technican: The O2 sensor is an interesting component in the emissions system. Quite often misdiagnosed as bad is replaced and for a while the engine runs ok. Then the problem returns. The O2 sensor is the last component in the intake system and provides input to the computer. Start with the basics clean the throttle body and injectors and not with that crap off the wally world shelf, go to a shop and have them hook it to the machine (a good shop will have machine that runs a very strong solution thru the intake, throttle body, injectors and fuel rail, cost should be about 35.00). Have them show you the machine many shops will charge you for this service and just drop some STP into the gas tank and say thanks. After doing this, then replace the O2 sensor or possibly sensors (some fords have as many as 3) and dont mix them up. If installed in the wrong places they will confuse the heck out of the computer. This should fix the check engine lite and most of the intermittent idle issue. If not then your idle speed control is going bad (also know as IAC or ISC control). They are not hard to replace but the cost can be a little high. I think your entire repair costs should be around 125.00. One other option is to replace the entire Throttle body with a known good one not from a junk yard. . Here's How To Get Guaranteed Solutions In Minutes
