1992 Ford Escort Malfunction - Engine

Question: Our 1992 Ford Escort dies when the car is driven in overdrive. It'll run fine for 2-4 minutes and then just quit. It usually takes 15-20 minutes before the car will start again. During that 15-20 minutes the car will turn over but just won't start. (If the car is run in regular drive, it runs loudly and uses more fuel but it doesn't quit/die.) We've had it into one of the local Ford dealers 3 times recently (they've replaced the timing belt, replaced the plugs and wires and flushed the transmission) but none of this has fixed the problem with the overdrive.

Technican: This is a tough one. I'm not one bit surprised that the timing belt (it's either good all the time or bad all the time- no in between), plugs, and wires did not solve the problem. I cannot speculate what their diagnostics were that led them to flush the transmission, highly suspect diagnostics (to put it kindly) all the way around. I want you to determine two things. Does the check engine light turn on when you first turn the key on during the no start period (as it normally does)? Using a spark tester, do you have spark to the spark plugs during the no start period. A spark tester is available inexpensively at your local auto-parts store. Let me know if you can determine these two things. If it is not safe for you drive the car and have it stall let me know (IE- Busy intersections, thruway, etc).

Owner: First thank you for your response. We did wonder at the credibility of the mechanic's findings but we're completely uneducated in car repair. Yes, the check engine dashboard light comes on when we attempt to restart the car once it dies. Yes, there is spark at the plugs too once the car has died and we're attempting to restart it. The car is definitely not safe to drive since it seems to quit randomly in all driving conditions. Can you help? THX!
