1994 Ford Escort Chugging - Engine

Question: Manual transmission. Engine stutters on acceleration. Problem is frequent but not constant. Revving up before releasing clutch sometimes alleviates it.

Technican: Any check engine light while the engine is running? When was the last tune-up? Bad plugs wires or a partially plugged fuel filter can cause this problem. As can a bad TPS (throttle position sensor) or airflow sensor (if app. depending on engine size). If you leave your email address I'll send information on testing sensors and for reading trouble codes (especially important if the check engine light is on).
Owner: No engine lights come on and tachometer doesn't show any loss of revs. However, my dashboard lights also don't show "low fuel" light, so it's possible a light's coming on and I have a bad bulb or something. Timing belt recently replaced, also both O2 sensors and PCV valve, and major hoses replaced when I bought the car last year. Gas mileage still good. EM
Technican: I will send the email a little later, am having trouble with it right now. Was the problem present before timing belt replacement? For the check engine light, if it comes on when you first turn the key on it's alright. By design it should go off within a few seconds of engine start-up if a fault is not detected.
Owner: No problem before timing belt broke suddenly six months ago. Update: I put a can of Sea Foam carburetor cleaner in it and the problem has disappeared completely. However, if there's a fuel filter I need to replace, or some other preventive maintenance I should do (maybe got a bad tank of gas? I do tend to run on on near-empty a lot), please let me know. Thanks
Technican: A bad tank of gas is possible. If you put seafoam in and this cured the problem the problem was likely 'dirty' fuel injectors or still possibly the fuel filter. I would recommend fuel filter replacement at your convenience. Instructions on their way. In the future it is recommended to avoid running on empty. The gasoline in the tank keeps the pump cool. When low on gas the pump runs hotter, running hotter tends to shorten fuel pump life (this is especially true of some aftermarket pumps). I wouldn't recommend going under 1/8 of a tank as preventative maintenance.
Owner: That's good info--thanks a lot! I got the Autozone info too.
