1994 Ford Escort Overheating - Engine

Question: Hi: This 1.9 liter engine climes to 3/4 or better on the temp gauge. I have changed the gauge sensor, ECT, flushed and visually inspected the radiator, cleaned debris from between condenser and radiator, changed thermostat (twice!) and checked AllData. They mention a cooling fan control switch that feeds the PCM (engine f/i computer) I have checked the relays and substituted known good relays. What am I missing??? Where is the fan control switch located? Darned if I can find it! Have one coming from Ford but... not sure it they knew what they were ordering. Seemed to be a new guy. Here's the odd part... turn on the A/C (fan comes on to keep air flow across the condenser) and no problem with overheating. Thanks for help, Ken C

Technican: Hi; The controller should be right up front on the radiator support. Might want to disconnect your temp sensor and see if the fan comes on immediately. If it does not it will be the controller. If it does then sound like you still have a bad sensor.
Owner: This is an Escort and not a Tarus? I believe that the PCM under the dash/radio sends the signal to turn on the relays (hi or low) that are in front of the left wheel well under the airfilter housing. You are correct in that the fan does come on when system is in open loop. The problem is the fan does not come on soon enough with the A/C off. This is an odd one! Thanks for prompt reply but I believe the control is done by the engine computer, according to AllData and info I have read. Ken C
Technican: Hi; Sorry about that. It is located under the dash underneath the stereo. .
Owner: Blue box or is it the normal ECM type box that is also the fuel injection computer found on top of the tunnel and against the firewall? Can not find out what the blue box is? What sends the controler (blue box or ECM/PCM) the signal to turn the fan on? Does this 94 have 3 coolant switches? All-Data says it does. Hum... If so WHERE IS IT??? Temp gauge (have replaced) Engine Coolant Temp (have replaced) electric cooling fan (to stupid to find) Ken C
Technican: Hi; Let me do some research and will get back to you tommorrow. Thanks.
Technican: Hi; According to all the info I have gathered there is only two of them. The engine controller is the one to turn the fan on.Thanks.
Owner: Do not laugh, I gave my IR tester to my brother! Now I need it. Fan should come on low speed at 207 degrees and high fan call in is at 230 degrees with A/C off. Thanks for reply. The system worked fine when A/C is on. Fan will eventualy turn on with A/C off but... comes on late. I have cleaned all grounds and swaped relays with known good. Seems ok now, seems to of "faith healed" it's self. Not a big fan of these type of "repairs." Not happy as the car is now "fixed" but I'm not sure why! What the heck is the blue box under the radio? Was tampered with as one of the two plugs has the retaining clip broken. This plug was not tight??? Hum..... Some days are better than others! Ken C
Technican: Hi; I can't remember what the blue box is. Will research it and respond. Thanks.
