1995 Ford Escort Malfunction - Ignition System

Question: when my old battery failed to charge, i used my portable buster to start the engine. at the time i connected the cables to the battery, the battery exploded (i was lucky i did not get burned by the acid). now i bought a new battery but i find that the car is dead. i mean dead. where should i look to find the problem. please help. Owner: i checked the fuses and they look ok. as per the starter and othee, i do not think this is the case because nothing works included the radio, the panel lites etc. in other words it is dead. it must be something else. thans for your suggestion GC
