1995 Ford Escort Won't Start - Ignition System

Question: i have a 1995 ford escort, 1.9. It cranks strong but no start. I pulled out the plug and no spark, and did not smell any gas. checked the fuel inertia switch it was not tripped. any suggestions?

Owner: I replaced the timing belt about 2 months ago, that is the only real trouble we have had with it.

Technican: Hello, I would recommend removing the ignition control module for testing at a local auto parts chain store. The ignition control module is about the size of a dollar bill and is mounted on a flat metal surface very near the distributor. It will have two electrical connectors and also is bolted down with four bolts. The size of the bolt heads is a 5.5 mm socket. Do you want to go this way?

Owner: by the way, I forgot to mention that just a few weeks ago when you open the door, you hear a (door Ajar Beeping). It has never done that before. It only did it when the keys where in the ignition and the door was open.

Technican: That could be the ignition key warning system telling you that the key has been left in the ignition. Did the sound stop by removing the ignition key? Did this feature just "wake up" and start working? The same warning system should alert you if you have left your lights on and the key is OFF.

Owner: it will do it with no key in the ignition and no lights on. thanks.

Technican: Have you looked for a blown fuse?

Owner: all fuses good. went to the auto zone. no way of checking the ignition control module. so I purchased one and installed it. same thing. all crank no start. took the line off from the top side of the fuel filter and no fuel coming out while cranking. any other suggestions?

Technican: I'm sorry you bought a part without having it tested. I would never recommend such action as it only increases your cost. Locally I use O'Reilly Auto Parts often. They have a tester. Does your fuel pump run for the first two seconds after turning the key to START? With the key ON do you have battery voltage supplied to the ignition coil?

Owner: i went and pulled the fuel pump, (aesy to get to). it works, outside of the vehicle plugged up to a battery. it does nothing with the key on. cleaned ground and terminal connection and still nothing, will go check the coil now.

Owner: just checked, no voltage to the coil. with the key on.

Technican: Check fuse # 7 in the dash fuse box and fuse #9 in the fuse box under the hood. Power should arrive at the ignition coil from the ignition switch via a Dark Blue wire. Does your fuel pump run for two seconds when the key is turned to ON?

Owner: Rodger, What happened was my wife jimmy rigged the button for the rear defroster to stay on constant and it burned up the blue wire on the switch. good to go. sorry it took so long to get back. thanks for your help. DN
