Technican: Hello, Several of the national auto parts chain stores will test your alternator for free. They will test your battery too. The parts can be on or off the car.
Should you decide to remove the alternator for testing and take it with you, the parts store will know which one you have and you won't have to make a second trip back to return the bad one for a core charge refund.
Give them a call and check availability of stocked parts and then go see them when you are ready. If you are not sure about the alternator model just price the more expensive one and if your budget is ok with that, you can't lose buying the one you need.
