1998 Ford Escort Smelling - Engine

Question: Hello, My 98 Ford Escort has a peculiar odor of raw sewage and sometimes it misses gears that result in a jerking motion of the car. Any ideas of what the problem could be?

Technican: Have the catalytic converter checked. Does the check engine light come on? If yes visit autozone or advance auto and they will read the trouble codes free of charge. Let me know what codes they find.
Owner: The "service engine soon" light comes on.I have tried to take it to autozone. I was told that they can't check "service engine" lights, only "check engine".
Technican: The catalytic converter will give off what is usually referred to as a rotten egg smell- is this what you smell? A restricted converter would be more noticable when the engine is warm and when trying to accelerate.
Owner: Yes, it has a rotten egg smell. I will have the converter checked out. Thank You
Technican: If the price is outrageous for repair, check partsamerica.com for a catalytic converter- on some vehicles the savings is remarkable.
Owner: I have checked the computer and recieved two DTC's. The first one is P0133-- 02 Sensor CKT Slow Response and P1131--Control Fuel Air Metering. Any suggestions? Thanks
Technican: This code often indicates failure of the oxygen sensor itself. Chances are the sensor has never been changed or is overdue to be changed. Replace this sensor and also clean the MAF (mass airflow sensor) filament with spray electrical cleaner. Your car will have two oxgen sensors in the exhaust system. The one you need is B1 S1. Translation- B1 or Bank One- there is only one bank on a four cylinder (on a V6 or V8 there are two banks). S1 or Sensor One- This is the sensor before the catalytic converter, if it was S2 or Sensor Two it would be the sensor after the converter. Replace the sensor and let me know what if the nasty smell disappears. Any questions?
Owner: Hello, I have changed the oxygen sensor, but within the first 15miles of driving the car a light gray smoke came from the engine. We have driven the car quite a bit after this and it has not occurred again. The smell has seemed to dissapear aswell. Also, the air conditioning/heater sporadically works. One day we will turn on the car and it works, but the next day it won't. Sometimes it will work for a few days and vica versa. Any Suggestions? Hope You Had A Good Easter Thanks
Technican: What doesn't work with the heater, the heater fan/blower itself? If this is the problem does it work on any speeds, or dead on all speeds when inoperative?
Owner: its dead on all speeds when inoperative, but works normally when operative. When operative the temperature and vents also work fine.
Technican: Lightly bang on the blower motor when inoperative and see if this gets it going. If it does the blower motor needs replacing. A less crude and more accurate way is to use a 12 volt test light or a dc voltmeter (a digital multimeter is about ten dollars at walmart) and see if power is reaching the blower motors electrical connector when inoperative.
