Technican: Hi;
It sounds like fuel pump problem. Relay would not let it atart at all. . Owner: Is the fuel pump located at the fuel tank? Technican: Hi:
Yes it is. Owner: I plan on doing the repair with a freind. Is there anything you can think of as a mechanic that we should know or do or take caution with besides disconnecting the battery cable, securing the vehicle so it doesnt drop on us and making sure the tank is as empty as possible? you know...anything we wouldn't think of that you would do. Technican: "One other thing not mentioned, ford utilizes an inertia shut off switch that is between the relay and fuel pump. Any chance you tripped this?
Was the sound that is now gone from the in tank fuel pump?
If the fuel pump is indeed gone it will only start a few times then eventually won't start again, may sputter a few times.
There is a good chance your pump is bad, nice to make certain before replacement.
A trick that will SOMETIMES work, give the fuel tank a smack in a few places with a block of wood (not to hard). This may get a stalled fuel pump running again. If the car will start now you have confirmed the fuel pump is worn out and needs replacement.
You really need instructions for fuel pump replacement and tank removal. Free instructions at:
e-toolbox.com/ads/
The most common mistakes by a do it yourselfer that you haven't covered are-
Creating a spark when removing the fuel sending unit (this is the assembly that attaches the fuel pump, wires, lines, gauge unit, etc). Use the appropriate tool and NOT a screwdriver and hammer.
Not replacing the fuel pump 'sock gasket' or the sending unit gasket.
Follow the intructions provided, don't attempt shortcuts.
One other thing, make sure the wires are ok as well as the connectors. Don't pinch the wiring harness between the tank and body, nor the fuel lines. Pay close attention to how they are routed before and during removal. Owner: yes it would start but not stay running. would sputter and then shut down. we were going 35 and it just slowed down and seemed like there was no gas and then it just died. had 1/2 tank of gas. started again for about 5 seconds then died, did that about 5 times. finally stopped trying didn't want to hurt the engine. The noise is completely gone now when the key is turned one click. Technican: Okay check the inertia shut off switch. The location should be in your oweners manual. If not I should be able to look it up. It is pretty clear the pump is not working, we need to make sure it's getting voltage.
Did you try banging on the tank(nothing to create a spark though)? Keep in mind if this works it can't be considered a permanent fix.
But does verify the pump is worn internally. Here's How To Get Guaranteed Solutions In Minutes
