1992 Ford Explorer Making Noise - Engine

Question: I used a stetscope to narrow it down to the #6 cylinder I hear the noise more coming out of the intake manifold it is inconsistant and more rapit upon accelleration the noise ceases when I disconect the spark plug wire for that cylinder and starts back upon connection of the wire #6 cylinder the plug is carbon filed I just replaced the heads w valve job and the lifters

Technican: Hello, I've read your statement, what is your question? Please advise.
Owner: what could the problem be and how can I diagnose it to tell what is causing the noise?
Owner: the noise is a knocking noise could it be cased by something on the top end I hear it more coming out of the intake manifold
Technican: Which V6 engine do you have, 3.0L..4.0L? How many miles on the rod and crank bearings? You stated you have replaced the heads with valve job and lifters. Was your goal to just do a valve job? No other known/suspected trouble? Did you use new head bolts during assembly? Do you believe the combustion chamber to be free of carbon? I'm wondering where the carbon on #6 plug came from? Have you treated the engine for carbon build-up? Are you confident the ignition timing is correct? Are the injectors OK? Thinking here,
Owner: hello my engine is a 4.0 pushrod engine with 160, 000 miles, it overheated and I cracked both heads, although it did not get that hot, they may have been cracked before I bought it a year ago, the machinist said they looked old I bought 2 new heads and had my valves put in them, never had a problem with this engine in the past, the plugs all burned very well and perfect, after replacing the heads, I got A bit of tapping and thats when I pulled them again{used all new gaskets again] to put in a set of rebuilt lifters I did use new head bolts also this time It started right up, but a inconsistent knock at # 6 cyl not on beat always more like every second but when I disconect the wire the knock lessens at hight idle it is still there but worse when the wire is connected, I pulled #6 plug and it is carbon filed it wasnt before, I replaced the heads I did not touch the timing, I did not bleed the rebuilt lifters, I did a resistance check on the injectors and they were all consistant in ohms, , I am doing a diagnostic with the little store bought computer and seeing what kind of engine trouble codes I will get, but will be checking back to here your response thank
Technican: Can you test the #6 plug wire resistance or swap it with another cylinder and move the problem? (Probably not since you've had the problem at #6 with the plug wire off) 160K miles...noise is worst when cylinder is firing but still noticable at high idle when not firing..piston slap maybe? Wrist pin wear? What in creation is causing the plug to "fill" with carbon, or, is it "foul" with carbon? This all says mechanical to me until I freeze on the #6 plug carbon. I'm thinking but am not clear on what to suggest to you!
Owner: I am doing the diagm now to see if any trouble codes appear I also want to say mechanicval but before pulling engine just want to be sure it is not a push rod knocking or a lifter I am gonna pull the valve cover off first and take out the push rods for that cyl and see if the knock is still there, thik that is a good idea?
Technican: Will the lifters stay in when the cam pushes them up? If they get out of their bore...off comes the intake again!
Owner: yes the heads actually keep the lifters in on this engine thats why I had to pull the heads the second time to put in the new lifters I am still taking off the valve cover at this time thanks for your quick responses
Technican: Good, I'm glad the lifters are retained. Take a close look at the valve springs for cracks/breaks if that is not already on your mind.
Owner: ok
Owner: I PULLED THE VVE COVER AND A PUSHROD IS LOOSE WHEN i PUSH THE PUSHROD IT IS SPRINGY AGAINST THE LIFTER UNDERNEATH ANY IDEAS? IS IT COLLAPSED OR WILL IT PUMP UP
Technican: It will likely pump up. Did information come with the lifters concerning an expected time to allow? Does the manufacturer have a help line you can call or a web site you can get customer service or technical support?
Owner: HEY I PULLED OFF THE VVE COVER AND A LIFTER WAS COLLAPSED AND BROKEN, I TOOK OFF THE HEADi RETURNED THE LIFTER, THE COMPANY I BOUGHT THE LIFTERS FROM GAVE ME A NEW ONE PLUS ANOTHER INTAKE MAN GASKET SET AND A HEAD GASKET, THAT WAS A SUPRISE SAVED ME 60.00 I WILL HAVE IT RUNNING AGAIN TOMMOROW GOD WILLING SO IT WILL BE MY FIN CHAT WITH YOU TOMMOROW I JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW THE OUTCOME, SO THANKS FOR THE HELP AND SUPPORT AND TK TO YOU TOMMOROW GOD BLESS YOU LARRY
Technican: Excellent! I would have been slow to believe a new lifter was broken but I've never known it all, and never claim to. I've enjoyed the thinking with you. Thanks. God bless you also,
Owner: Thank you it is together and all is well you take it easy it was fun to this end God bless you and yours Larry d
