Technican: Hello, Have you checked the transmission fluid level?
A routine maintenance service for the transmission calls for only a new filter, a transmission pan gasket, and fluid. Labor included this service is under $100 in most any shop.
If the fluid is full I recommend you discuss this with a transmission technician at a shop you know to be reputable in your area. Replacing bands is not routine and may or may not be needed.
A visit to a shop should include a road test (with you riding along) so that you agree together the problem symptom is identified and a plan for repairs can be afforded by you and guaranteed by him.
Should an overhaul be needed the transmission has to come out of the vehicle and be completely disassembled for cleaning, inspection, replacement of worn and service parts, reassembled, reinstalled and road tested for operation as designed. Big money here.
Go see someone with the training, tools, experience to minimize your cost. DO NOT authorize anything you do not understand and agree to pay for. Stay in control. It's your vehicle and your money. Owner: I have checked the fluid and it has been low. I added two quarts three separate times and when I check it'/s low again. After I add fluid there is plent, but two or three days later it'/s low again. I check it when the car is running. Someone said my filter may be clogged. Technican: A clogged filter can be at fault for delaying the engagement of Drive or Reverse gear, but cannot be cause of fluid loss.
Fluid loss is either a leak onto the ground, a cooling tank leak into the radiator, or can be sucked into the engine through a failed diaphram in a vacuum shift modulator.
It's important to see where the fluid loss is going and stop/fix it. Low fluid causes damage because lubrication and cooling of parts is impaired. Fluid line pressure suffers. Wear is accelerated. A major failure is a given expectation here.
A stopped up filter causes a restriction that results an impaired fluid flow that even a transmission with no leak at all will have a shortened life for the above reasons. Owner: I appreciate your help in this matter! There is no leakage on the ground, ever! If it is leaking into the radiator or engine, is it costly to fix? Does this still mean I have transmission problems? Should I still have the filter fluid changed. thank you very much! Here's How To Get Guaranteed Solutions In Minutes
