Question: As the engine gets hotter the voltmeter needle drops lower on the scale. The oil pressure gauge goes up on the scale. Later as the ambient temperature and the engine temperature gets cooler, the voltmeter goes back up and the oil pressure pointer goes down. Also when everything heats up under the hood, my ABS light goes on either as I shift into gear or I drive for just a few feet. I am suspecting that my voltage regulator may be the cause. I have cleaned the only 2 ground connections that I can find at the firewall and the inner fender apron.

Technican: You are on the right track. YOu have a couple of grounds behind the dash that are either loose or corroded. I would start by removing the instrument panel from the truck and cleaning everything you can see.. I am sure that will fix the problem.. This can be a problem later in the life of the truck because the voltage drops also cause temps to rise possibly causing a dash fire down the road. .. Owner: By doing what you suggest, could that also take care of the ABS light coming on? Could the higher temperatures affect the performance of the internal voltage regulator in the alternator? I was thinking that replacing the alternator might fix it. According to my Chilton manual a wavering voltmeter indicates a problem with the alternator. Technican: Before replacing the alternator, I would take it to your local parts store .. most of them (Napa, Autozone, Discount, Advance) will test your alternator and regulator for free. There is also a requirement to replace the plug that attaches the alternator to the wiring harness (not an easy job). To answer your question on the ABS question, it might fix the problem but I dont think so. Lets address one then we can work the other. Let me know. Here's How To Get Guaranteed Solutions In Minutes
