1993 Ford Explorer Other - Windows & Glass
Question: My console armrest bracket (plastic) has cracked and I either want to replace the bracket or try to repair it with epoxy. Either way, I would like to remove the actual upholstered armrest from the bracket for ease of repair or replacing. I have already removed the armrest/bracket assembly from the console. Any help with removing the bracket from the armrest? It looks like it would be simple, but apparently not simple enough for me. I would appreciate any insight into this. Thanks G. Hart.

Technican: go to the dealership and ask them for an armrest repair kit. Technican: I have a '98 Explorer and the dealership has replaced it three times, but it always breaks again (usually because I lean over to pick something up off the pax side floorboard and forget it pull up the armrest).
In my opinion, it really needs to be made of steel, but forgoing that, this is MY fix and has served me well for the past 3 years:
Remove the armrest from the console, remove the screws securing the padding and remove the padding. Go to Home Depot, etc and get some 1/4" wire mesh sheeting. Cut to fit over the cracked area leaving about 2 inches on either side. Fit the mesh to the top of the cracked area closely. Slather on a strong 2-part epoxy over the mesh and let cure for 24 hours (to be sure).
Again, I fixed mine this way 3 years ago and despite leaning on it time and time again, it has never broke. The steel in the wire and the epoxy bonding is just too strong. I think I would actually have to sit on it to break it.
and let us know how it works out! Owner: Apparently my armrest is somewhat different than yours. I cannot remove the padded part, because there are no screws to do this. The plastic bracket fits into another "glued-in" plastic piece that is attached to the armrest.
Thanks for your reply, but I wish to cancel my inquiry at this time. Thanks. Here's How To Get Guaranteed Solutions In Minutes
