1994 Ford Explorer Lagging - Engine
Question: After driving for 3 hours in the desert the check engine light comes on and the car begins to loose power. Turning the AC off and all other ventilation, helps somewhat but doesn't prevent the check engine light to go on. Once before turning the AC off, the car began to shake like crazy, after coming to a stop. I've had a catalytic converter put in, an transmission flush, at which time the following codes came up: #172 EGO not switching lean bank. #173 EGO not switching right bank 1 - #176 EGO not switching lean bank 2, #177 not switching Rich Bank 2, 188 cruise Rich limit, #542 fuel pump ckt, open ECA to Grd. Nobody can figure out what's going on, not even Ford dealers, who want me to bring the car in when it happens, but it only happens after three hours driving.
Please help me figure this out. Thank you so very much!!!!!!!!!

Technican: Hello, what engine do you have, please? 2WD or 4WD? How soon do you expect to have to drive three hours again?
What kind/grade of fuel do you use? How many miles on this Explorer?
Please advise. Owner: Hi, it's a 4wheel drive, 94, 000 miles, and I use special gasoline. In two weeks I expect to drive back from L.A.to Phoenix. It happens one hour before Blythe, or 3 hours into my trip.
Thank you so much. Technican: Thank you for the info I need to try to get you some answers.
Back soon as I research the code behavior you listed. Owner: Thanks! Technican: This is strange! When codes #172, 173, 176 & 177 are set there is a possibility that the engine oil is contaminated with fuel.
Codes 172 & 173 are Bank #1 (left) oxygen sensor related. #176 & 177 are Bank #2 oxygen sensor related.
The data base recommends replacing the PCV Valve and changing the oil and filter. Then clear the codes and drive it.
The code #188 says the left heated oxygen sensor has a problem; the adaptive fuel lean limit has been reached. This would mean that the ECA has called for a leaner fuel mix and the oxygen sensor cannot report to the ECA that the leaner mixture is happening. (Fuel is still too rich)
Code #542 calls for circuit checks relative to a faulty ground circuit for the fuel pump relay.
Do you have a FAX number? This is too much to type.
All that said, tell me more about your "special fuel". It may be cooking on the oxygen sensors and failing their performance. Owner: Hi, my fax number i 310 6527535, hit start when you hear my voice. Well, to be perfectly honest, I have been mixing grades becaue of the cots. However, most of the time it's the middle one, inbetween the most and the least expensive.
Thank you so much.
Hani Technican: Okay, so you are buying gasoline from 87-91 Octane. Nothing really unique, just different grades of unleaded gasoline?
