Question: Started using oil recently, about 1 quart in 1000 miles, but bad pinging on uphill started same time as oil consumption. No obvious oil burning or leaks.

Technican: My truck was doing the same thing. I replaced the plugs and wires and the problem went away... for a while. It seems the engine now eats about a quart of oil for every 3000 miles. I was told I have a broken ring. My truck is a work truck so I dont plan on putting any real money into the engine. A junk yard engine will cost you about 700.00. I also started to use a product from Walmart called Restore. I use the one for the V8 because the 4.9 is a big engine. Hope this helps. Just ask if you have more questions. Al Technican: MAF (mass airflow sensor) contamination has been a major problem and will cause pinging. The sensors filament gets dirty. Gently clean the filament with electrical parts cleaner.
Edit, Copy and Paste this page into your address bar, it offers pictures of the mass airlfow sensor and addresses the leaky lower intake gasket-
