1994 Ford Explorer Smelling - Engine
Question: When i am driving a long distance, I can see smoke and smell what seems like rubber burning. When i inspect under the hood after stopping, i can find nothing burning. Only when driving long distances does this happen. When i drive in town, everything seems fine.

Technican: Hello, When driving long distances the powertrain is, of course, as warm as can be. Though the cooling system does it's job to prevent an overheated engine, nothing really takes the radiant heat off the metal surfaces other than airflow that is under the hood. A good part of this airflow comes first through the radiator and brings more heat to flow across all it contacts.
What I'm suspecting is if you have a slow oil leak from a valve cover the oil will be very thin viscosity ( it's really hot ) and seep down near enough the exhaust manifold heat (hottest place under the hood) it will smolder and burn away. Over time the leak will worsen and won't need such distance driving to manifest the same symptom.
All said, if this fits your situation, it needs to be addressed, as the possibility of the oil getting on the exhaust could in worst case cause a fire.
