Technican: Hello, I hope to be able to get you some ideas tomorrow by accessing the Mitchell 1 Data Base after 9:00a.m. CDT. What engine and transmission do you have, please?
Owner: Thank you for getting back to us. The engine is the standard 4 Liter V6 and the transmission is a 4R55E. Also the transfercase is a electronically controlled borg-warner 13-54. Thank you, Jason and Bobbi
Owner: Sorry I gave you the wron transfer case. The correct on is a Borg-waren 44-05 or c-trac. Hope this helps. Bobbi and Jason
Technican: Thank you. Now I can research for a cause for this trouble. What happens if you stop the vehicle, shift to neutral, select 4WD LOW, shift to REVERSE and then wait a couple seconds before you shift back to DRIVE? Will it go into 4WD Low??
Owner: No it still does the same thing. we always put 4LOW in by putting the car in neutral. It ushally went in then all of a sudden it quit. The 4auto and 2High work just fine. Jason and Bobbi
Technican: Do you have a OBDII code reader? Can you have your vehicle scanned for codes? Fuses 26 & 27 are relative to 4WD on the Explorer, are they good? Do you have a fax number?
Owner: I have a faxnumber, but you will have to call me first so that I can hook it up. My phone number is (907) 646-9991. We do not have the scanner and we are coraspondding with you so that we don't have to get the car scanned for codes. the guy I spoke to about it wants $65.00 to start and can't tell me how much it will end up being to pin point the problem. About the fuses, Jason thinks that all the fuses are working fine. He wants to know where those two fuses are located incase that he has overlooked them. Thank you Bobbi and Jason
Owner: Hi, I also wanted to mention that Jason thinks that it could be the electric controler for the 4WD located in the rear compartment by the jack. Does this sound like a possibility to you? Dou you know what codes would show up it the controler was not working properly? Jason and Bobbi
Technican: Codes relative to the transfer case are from P1804 through P1867. Thats alot of codes! Do you have an owners manual to show fuse locations? I don't, but may be able to borrow one. What time zone are you in so I don't call at an inopertune time? I have fifteen pages of data (so far) from which to draw information and testing ideas. Are you near a national auto parts chain store? They have code readers (OBDII type) and will often scan for codes for free. They usually will not clear the codes for you due to liability issues, but right now we don't care. A code reader costs $150 and up.
Owner: Your fist e-mail was recieved at 4am. I am in Alaska I think we are about 4 hours diff. We have a haynes manual for my car. Jason is looking to see if it has a diagram of all the fuses. I don't know what an auto test center is so when I speak to you you can exsplain it and we may have one. We are in the biggest city in AK so we should, I just haven't heard of it. Jaosn and Bobbi
Technican: I'm referring to a national auto parts chain store such as O'Reiley's, NAPA, Pep Boy's, Autozone, etc., when I mention having codes read for free with an OBDII Code Reader. Surely a local Ford Dealer in your city would let you see an owners manual for your SUV's fuse panel mapping. Are they cooperative? I am in Oklahoma and in the Central Time Zone.
Technican: Today (11/28/03) I sent you 15 pages of information relative to your SUV by USPS. The package is an 8&1/2" X 11" flat white envelop. Hope it helps you. Please let me know how to further assist you and I'll sure try to help.
Technican: Hello, What is happening here, please? Please advise.
Owner: with the holiday and the flu we haven't been able to get much done. we recieved the papers and Jaosn says that they are helpful. He is hoping to get the exsplorer in the shop this week and look into the things that the papers showed him. I called the NAPA auto care center and they do not read codes for free they want $75.00. Jason thinks that the information you sent will help track down the problem. I appreciate you keeping in touch with us so well. We will contact you when he has a chance to get the car in the shop. Jason and Bobbi
Technican: Get well! God bless you guys.
Technican: Hello, Will you please take a moment and give me an update on this question? Thanks! Merry Christmas,
Owner: I haven't forgot about you, we have been busy with work and the holidays. Jason doesn't have free axcess to a shop so we can only get the car in when the shop at work is available. Jason is trying to eliminate or pinpoint the problem wuth the info you sent us. Bobbi
Technican: That is good news Bobbi, I'll look forward to your staying in touch. I'll help Jason if he has a question, please remember you have the copies. If I need to go back to the library and get more info, I will.
Technican: Just checking in...any news?
Owner: none, Jason has been soooo busy lately. Do you want me to hit pay the mechanic button so that this doesn't inconvenniance you? Sorry that he hasn't done anything on it yet. Since it isn't keeping me from driving it gets pushed to the side. Bobbi
Technican: Selecting the pay button is your choice. No pressure from me. When a question runs 60 days, will pay me automatically unless the customer requests a refund. I want to help where I can.
Owner: if i pay you can we still converse? Bobbi
Technican: If you pay me, it will close the question and we cannot continue as we are. Leave it open, it's not about the money, I don't mind at all.
Technican: !!!!!!!!!!!!HEY BOBBI!!!!!!!!!, The Ford Explorer and the Ranger pick-up are built on the same technology. My 1999 Ranger pick-up 4WD did this very same flashing 4WD Lo and 4WD High lights six times. I drove it and it does it about every 2 miles. I checked all the fuses, all OK. I checked the transfer-case wiring connector for cleanliness and weathertight fit, all OK. Then I smacked the transfer-case shift motor itself a couple times and all is well again. Like the motor was in a bind or something. I'm not running to the store for parts when a hammer can wake a motor up. Might need a motor someday.... Interesting to note that my code reader could not pull up a code for this fault. My Ford dealer says their's can but I'm no rookie for the bait they are talking. Try a hammer! Don't get too mean. The motor is easily identified at the rear of the transfer-case in the copies I sent you. Your turn,
Technican: Well, That was a short victory. I shifted in and out of 4WD a dozen times. I drove about one mile in 4WD High, shifted back to 2WD and went on with my day. I drove about 50+ miles and my problem is back! I'll keep you posted.
Owner: well now my problem is truley close to home. I am sorry that you are having problems with your p/u. Jason and I were thinking that it was the moter that was bad, but we wanted to find a way to test it instead of replacing it. I hope you get real busy troubleshooting your p/u. Bobbi
Technican: I'll get into it some today. :( I can buy parts wholesale, can you guys get a discount?
Owner: We can get a discount through NAPA becasue Jason's dad ownes an auto body and mechanical shop. We can't wait to hear what you findout. Bobbi
Technican: Tried it today. Works everytime. It will screw up again I'm sure. I'll let you know.
Technican: My truck messed up again today. I got my hands on a NGS Scanner and found 10 codes!! Some of them I set while jacking around trying to speak english and remain conscious. After writing down all codes, we cleared them and one code came right back. (B2141) The code says the GENERIC ELECTRONIC CONTROL (GEM) needs to have the calibration values for the differential gear ratio and tire size programmed in. I have to learn the size of the ring gear (probably 7.5") in the rear end. Tire size is a REVOLUTIONS PER MILE value. I have P245/75R16 Bridgestone Dueler A/T tires and the value to be programmed is 683 revs/mile. We ran out of time so I'll resume this quest on Monday. I've never had this module replaced, disconnecting the battery will not cause a programmed value to be lost, so if it will not program and retain memory on Monday I'll be replacing the GEM at $153.40 wholesale cost for the part. A new GEM has to be programmed for gear ratio and tire revs/mile also. I haven't had the chance to see if this is a dealer item only. I'll be getting mine from Ford. I can't figure how the hammer on the motor case had any effect on the GEM mounted in the dash behind the radio. I remain skeptical. In short, without a NGS SCANNER to use you may be in for an expensive repair. Ask Jason's dad if he has a scanner that will help you guys. Maybe a Snap On will work. More when I turn the next page in this novel,
Owner: With the problem you are having is your 4WD high working. Ours does. and we only get the code if we try to put it into 4WD Low? Jason is going to take it to the shop on Sunday(tomarrow) and see if he can figure anything out! keep your fingers crossed. Bobbi
Technican: My 4WD is completely disabled by the condition present. It's a race to the finish. The least expensive repair wins!
Technican: I had a dealer reprogram the GEM Module on my truck to clear the B2141 code. I took the plate switch sensor loose from the transfer case and worked the switch by rotating it back and forth a few times to renew the electrical contacts (hoping to knock off any build up that would effect performance. Reassembled all, cleared all codes, it works! I have all functions for 4WD now. How are you doing with yours?
Technican: More than anything else I believe that taking loose the plate switch sensor and rotating the stem/shaft back and forth and even all the way around is what got me going again. It felt like I worked away a "resistance spot" and turning the shaft of the sensor became a more uniform effort. To access the sensor you'll need a "Tamper-proof" torx bit to remove the three screws that mount the round shaped sensor to the back of the transfer case. You do not have to disconnect any wires to do what I did.
