1996 Ford Explorer Failing - General
Question: Cruise control gradually stopped working. Now light on dash for it doesn't show speed control engaged. Checked all control buttons and circuits, ohmmed wire ribbon around steering wheel hub down to under dash, fuses, servo to throttle cable, all OK. Lights that illuminate the thumb buttons are out. What's next step? Relays? I had a '94 that broke too, but sold it that way. Thanks

Technican: The thumb lights are lit by power on the red/black wire going into the steering wheel clock spring, and grounded on the black/white wire. If a test light lights between those 2 wires, then the clock spring, bulbs, or switch assembly is bad. For operation, check fuse 13, fuse 10, make sure speedometer is working. There are 2 brake switches that disable the system, check at the servo/ampifier for power coming in on the tan/light blue wire. Should have no power until brake pedal pushed. Check the black/yellow wire, should have 12v until brake pedal is pushed. With a digital multimeter, check the voltage with the key on between the light blue/black wire and the dark green/orange wire. The voltage should vary when resume, set and coast buttons are pushed and held. If no change in voltage, likely a bad clock spring or switch assembly. Owner: Fuses #10 and 13 are OK. All switches act normally, and have proper voltages. All resistors have correct ohm values, and change with switches pressed. Resume = 2200 ohms, coast = 120 ohm, set = 680 ohms, on/off = 1000 ohms. That should rule out boyh thumb switches and clock spring problems.
I tested the tan/light blue wire. Zero volts until brake pedal pushed, then 11.6 volts.
Black/yellow no volts with key off and 11.6 with key on. Zero volts when brake is on.
Your last test is between light blue/black, and green/orange. No voltage with key off or on, and no changes with set or coast buttons pushed. Do you still think the clock spring or buttons are defective even though the other tests say they are OK?
The cruise dash indicator never comes on anymore when on button is pushed. Any new suggestions? Bilou Technican: Bilou,
You did great on the tests you ran. Is the speedometer working? I assume you made all your tests at the amplifier, which is the right place to work from. Verify that the cruise indicator lamp works by jumping the orange/light blue wire to ground. Verify a good ground on the pink/orange wire. Make sure you get an a/c vlotage when moving on the gray/black wire. (jack up the wheel to make it easier). If all these test fine, then you need a new servo/amplifier assembly.
