Question: My 1996 Ford Explorer has 161k miles on it, every time I drive it the overdrive off light flashes constantly when I accelerate to 40mph & upward. In addition the automatic tranny gears do not change out as they should, what could be the problem ?

Technican: You have an electric shift transmission and it sounds like you might have a problem with an internal shift solenoid. I do recommend taking it to a repair shop that can hook a scanner up to your truck to watch the shift solenoids as your vehicle is moving. Your transmission computer may also have a fault code stored in it which could provide a direction of repair. Some places will check it for free some will charge a small fee so you should ask about that. The easiest thing to do first though would be to change the trans filter and fluid, then see how it operates. (this would be a cheap fix if it works). If I can help any further (even after you have it looked at just for any advise) you can contact me at upon acceptence of this response.
