1996 Ford Explorer Malfunction - Electrical & Lighting Systems
Question: When car is parked and door lock/alarm is set, the alarm (cyclical horn application) will go off after a random period of time without any disturbance to the car. All the door switches work (open door indicator works properly).

Technican: Hello, The best way I can think of to approach this problem is with a scanner that can communicate with the GEM Module. (The body computer)
If you always lock/unlock the vehicle with a keyless entry remote it's possible that cycling each front door lock cylinder might correct a slightly imperfect position of the arm/disarm switch at the door lock cylinder.
A scanner can look at the feedback circuits that the GEM Module monitors for clues to the real trouble. You may need a shop's help with this one, but still, I'm going to research this for Technical Service Bulletins that may apply. May be tomorrow before I can get to the data base.
Have you verified that all electric locks actuate their full travel on command?
Thoughts?, Technican: Hi, I'm checking in with you. Any news here? Owner: Cycling door locks did not help. Technican: Will you have access to an OBD II Scanner to assist the diagnosis process? It was my first suggestion.
Please advise. Owner: ,
I do not have access to a scanner for the body computer. I do have an Actron II that has a light for the body codes but apparently it will only access the ECU. Technican: I'll ask my sources for a common cause but it may not be much help without a scanner that can communicate with the body module to verify circuit feedback integrity.
Do you want to release this question so that others may try, or shall I proceed? You may need a shop's help with this one. Technican: Hello, Do you have a FAX number? Would a cover sheet be needed for the fax to get to your attention?
I can send you some data and a wiring diagram you may be able to gleen info from.
It is all based on having a scanner...
