1996 Ford Explorer Other - Heating & Cooling System


Question: My heater will not blow warm air. I have replaced the thermostat and that did not fix the problem. I have also checked the antifreeze levels. When I turn my heater on, it blows as cold of air as when I have the A/C on. I have not seen any signs of a leaking heater core. Can you think of anything else it could be? Thanks so much!

Technican: This is actually a common problem. Your problem lies in you have a vacuum leak that is preventing the heat control valve (located behind the glove box) not to get the vacuum control signal. I have found the most likely source of your leak is the 3 vacuum lines located at the top of the intake manifold. You either have a split boot, cracked line or missing plug. Let me know. Al
Owner: Thank you for your prompt response. We have checked the hoses, and the air blend door, and there does not appear to be any cracks or leaks in the hoses, and the air blend door appears to be working properly. Do you have any other suggestions for what the problem may be? Also, the water in the radiator does not heat up when the car is left running for an extended period of time? Could this be a related problem?
Technican: Our computer is on all the time so prompt is not a problem.. Did you verify you have vacuum at the controller for the blend door? Also the vacuum leak can be anywhere in the vacuum system.. yes even at the power brake booster. Did you see the blend door operate on its own or did you have to manipulate it? Owner: To be quite honest I am a little uncertain as to how to determine if I have vacuum at the blend door or not? I would assume so - but can you tell me just how to determine this. And let me say this - I am not certain of your policies with answering questions - but I am willing to pay for your assistance - and I am willing to increase the amount paid for your troubles. Owner: Easy way to determine proper control is just start the truck, remove the glove box and observe the blend air control change position while you change the air direction from feet to defrost to full to ... (all the positions) or with the truck running remove the vacuum plug from the blend air control and see if you have vacuum while changing those positions. Owner: Hello again! Well, we do haave vacuum and we replaced the thermostat on Saturday. And to answer one of you previous questions, we do not have any warm or hot air coming from teh vents with the temp is set to 90 degrees. Only cold air. So what next.
Owner: Now we are getting to the hard stuff. We need to check for flow. With the engine cold I want you to remove one of the hosed from the heater core. Anywhere at all will be ok.. have someone start the engine and look for water to flow from both ends that are open. Shut down the engine. If you do not have flow remove the other hose and see if you can blow thru the heater core. If you can see what the liquid looks like and if you cant let me know that also. Waiting on your next email.
