1997 Ford Explorer Making Noise - Drive Train & Driveline
Question: My 1997 Ford Explorer 4.0 Liter V6 SOHC 4x4 Automatic, makes a whirring sound whenever I take my foot off the gas. It also happens sometimes when I switch from Drive to Reverse. The transmission shifts fine, and there are no lights on. It usually happens when the engine is over 2000 RPMs. The faster is gas pedal is un-pressed the louder/faster the sound is. It sounds kind of like a drill.

Technican: Hi;
Might want to check the u-joints.. Owner: The U-Joints were replaced 1 1/2 years ago. Technican: Hi;
Re check them. A year and a half ago with mileage and no maintenance can do a lot of harm. Owner: The U-joints are fine. They would make a popping sound. This is more of a whine or a whir. Technican: Only other thing that I can think off is the torque converter. Might whant to have a transmission shop check it. Owner: Wow! This site sucks ASS. Its nice to know "mechanics" take the money and offer no help for the problems. Technican: Hi;
