1998 Ford Explorer Chugging - Engine
Question: I have a 1998 Ford Explorer that has begun chugging or stuttering when I am accelerating (not everytime, but quite often). It occasionally does the same sort of thing while I am driving at a continuous speed - generally 30 mph or less. In addition, the "check engine" light is always on. Help!!

Technican: Hello, What engine do you have, please? How many miles?
It would be a great help to find out what code your computer has stored that turns on the check engine light. If you do not have a code reader, call your local national auto parts chain store and see if they will read the codes for you for free. Some will and some will not without a fee. None of them will clear the code/codes due to liability issues.
The guys that don't charge for this service are hoping you'll buy parts from them if they can make a recommendation based on what codes they find.
Check Engine light codes can be as simple as a loose gas cap. We need to identify the codes to set a baseline for repair procedures. Could be a misfire, a sensor...the codes often point the way.
How would you like to begin?
Please advise. Technican: Hello, Haven't heard from you. Do you still need help? Owner: Thank you! I will head down to my local Schuck's and see if I can't sweet talk them into getting the code for me. I will let you know what I come up with.
