1998 Ford Explorer Malfunction - Electrical & Lighting Systems
Question: The 4 Wheel Drive High/Low dash lights flash 6 times about every couple of minutes. It sounds like it is trying to engage at times. Around the same time the power locks started not to always work on the front doors and the back windsheild wiper does not come on at all anymore. And could it affect the braking system at all, we have added brake fluid but still are pushing the peddal all the way to the floor.

Technican: Hello, I'll have some suggestions for you later today as I put my research together. Will you be making repairs yourself?
What engine, please? Are you adding brake fluid but find no leak? When the door locks do not work properly does the fault include all switch or keyless remote commands fom both front door switches?
Do all fuses check out OK for the rear wiper feature?
Please advise. Technican: I'm needing to hear from you with answers to my initial questions so I can get you the help you requested.
Please advise. Owner: Sorry for the delay. The engine is a V6 4.0. The brake fluid is not leaking. Locks are having a problem no matter if it is remote, keyless or from the switch on the door. The only thing I have not been able to check is the fuse for the rear wiper. The warning lights and the 4 wheel drive is the main concern if everything else is all seperate. Technican: "The first thing I would do is to get under the vehicle and remove the transfer case shift motor sensor. It is round (about 3") in shape and has wires between it and the shift motor. Mine is blue in color. You'll find it mounted on the rear of the transfer case and hard wired to a motor to it's left.
Do not disconnect any wires and do not remove the shift motor. Unbolt only the sensor and turn it so you can see the gear that comes out of the sealed sensor. You will not lose trans fluid.
Notice there is a flat spot on this gear to index it to the transfer case gear when you reinstall it.
Hold the sensor case with one hand and turn the sensor gear both ways and you'll note it stops turning at about the same distance in each direction. Sort of like how a volumn control on a radio would work when turned it's full sweep/range.
Each time you come to a stopping point use a little extra effort to widen the range of travel in each direction. You will "break through" this resistance until you can turn the sensor gear 360 degrees.
When you find that you can turn the sensor gear 360 degrees in both directions with the same amount of effort, index the gear on the sensor with the transfer case gear and remount the sensor. Do not overtighten the mounting screws.
Drive the vehicle and with normal process attempt to select 4WD HI and 4WD LO. Does it work properly now? I believe it will and you won't be spending $500-$600 for a transfer case shift motor and sensor assembly and labor.
Please advise.
" Technican: Will you please update the status of this question? Owner: We tried what you said and the only thing that it corrected was it wouldn't go into low before. The lights are still flashing and it still tries to engage at times. Usually it is when the car is first started after sitting and when you turn. Is there something else that we can do? Technican: All right. Can you now select and get into and out of 4WD LO?
Will backing the vehicle say 15-20 feet disengage the hubs okay?
I'm wondering if the switch used to select 4WD has a problem that commands 4WD HI all the time due to some sort of short or sticking condition.
Do the lights(4WD) still flash the same number of times and as often?
I'll do further research for you. I do want to help. Technican: Hello, I'm still hoping to hear from you. Have you read my previous message? Owner: We hadn't had any luck with it at all, until last week when we got snow here. The four wheel drive had to kick in on it's own and when that happened the lights stopped coming on and we haven't had any problems with it since. Technican: Well I'll be....you ought to keep a vehicle that can fix itself! Impressive!
What then will you do with this question?
