Technican: Hi;
There could be alot things making the noise. The best way to find it, would be to get you a piece of vacuum line about 2 feet or longer. When it starts making the noise take aone end of the vacuum line and put it to your ear and then move the other end around to where you hear the noise. You should be able to pin pointed. I know this sounds "corny", but trust me it works. . Technican: Hello, What engine do you have and how would you describe the noise to sound? Does the sound remain constant in pitch, or does it change with the speed of the engine? Can you turn anything on or off and effect this noise?
Please advise. Owner: could it possibly be the iddle air control vavle? Technican: I have no idea! I've asked you questions that will help me "tune in" to help. Without knowing what I'm facing here I won't even try to guess. I noticed the other mechanic jumped right in without asking you one diagnostic question.
Please tell me about the engine size and try to describe the noise. Then we can get a qualified start. Owner: my engine is a v6 4liter. the noise is very high pitched and comes when my car has just started or ideling and then wants to stall if i dont hit the gas. the noise seems to be coming from or somewhere around the airintake and filter Technican: Thank you! Often a 4.0L won't idle well due to a vacuum leak. A vacuum leak will most likely occur where the vacuum hose connects onto a fitting and would easily be described as a high pitched hissing sound.
Look carefully at the vacuum hoses that connect to the intake manifold, the EGR valve, any sensor, anywhere. Its best to use a bright flashlight and even a small mirror to look at (and behind) these hose connections for a split or one disconnected. I ensure the hose to be servicible and connected at both ends of it's run.
Vacuum hose servicibility means not so hard it is brittle, not so soft that vacuum will flatten it. Should you find one split or disconnected you can just cut the split end off and reconnect it (length permitting). Vacuum hoses vary in size from 5/16 to 3/8" OD.
