2003 Ford Explorer Vibration - Chassis, Suspension & Steering
Question: Brake Light was coming on and noise/vibration sometimes when braking. Took to shop and had new front brake pads and rotors, including replace wheel seals and re pac wheel bearings. Got vehicle back no longer have the brake light coming on but was having vibrations. Took back to shop and was told that the brake problem had masked that the ABS Module was shot. Told that they couldn't get a replacement (no longer made) and that our brakes system now was like the old standard prior to ABS. Questions...(1) The ABS light still comes on when you start the vehicle is this possible if the ABS module is shot? (2) Is it safe to drive this vehicle with only standard brakes? (still have vibrations and noices sometime when braking but works)(3) Our ABS modules still avaiable for the 93?

Technican: If the abs light is on the abs system is deactivated. Anti-lock brakes are widely considered safer than standard brakes, the only flaw with this thinking is it assumes the driver knows how to use an antilocking brake system. With a functioning antilock braking system you slam on the brakes when you need to stop in an emergency situation. With standard brakes you risk skidding, especially at higher speeds and obviously on a slippery surface if you slam on the brakes. All that said- yes it is still safe to drive with the antilock brakes deactivated. Keep in mind antilock or not the rest of the braking system needs to be in good working order to be considered safe. Vibrations are not a sign of good working order, but it is hard to determine at this point if the vibration is on the mechanical side of the brakes or the abs activating.
What years is this, a 2003 or 1993? I'll look and see if a module is available? Please include engine size and 2 or 4 WD. Owner: 1993 Ford Explorer 2WD 4.0 Liter Engine
Note: The ABS light comes on and then goes off when you start the vehicle (as it has always done)..Does this mean the ABS system is still working?? I am still felling vibrations (not all the time) should I take this vehicle back to the shop and have them look at this again. Thanks Technican: If the ABS comes on and then goes off, this is normal. Therefor the ABS system is working, or at least attempting to work. If the ABS light comes on while the vehicle is running then the system is deactivated.
To answer one of your previous questions, yes the abs system could have a problem but still try to work. If it is trying to work but works incorrectly this can be dangerous. In this case you are better off with conventional brakes, assuming you are familiar with how to use them- At least you know what is happening when you push the brake pedal- Compared to an abs controller that may be activating at the wrong times.
