Technican: I haven't checked to see what the torque recommondation is, if this is what you are wondering let me know. Are you holding the pinion flange with a good sized pipe wrench while tightening the nut? Another option is to thread a couple bolts into the flange and wedge a pry bar inbetween the bolt to hold it while tightening. There is a lot of info that may be helpful at- drivetrain.com/
Owner: Basically my concern is overtightening the pinion flange. If you overtighten the pinion nut will you collapse the bearing spacers? I do not have the vehicle back wheels off the ground, as mentioned I replaced the front bearing and seal and was not aware that the nut had to be tightened to a certain torque (book says 160#'s)Do you have to hold the pinion yoke with the wheels on the ground? HK
Technican: All of the force is to be held with (let's say) your pipe wrench, so I don't see how it could matter if the tires are on the ground or not. What does matter is making sure the wheels are blocked, the battery is disconnected, and that the vehicle is supported by jackstands or suitable blocks- your safety first. If you overtighten the nut damage certainly could occur. With this in mind, many nuts/bolts that are supposed to be properly torqued are 'hammered' on with impact wrenches. Many so called professional technicians are guilty of this. The recommended procedure is always best, simply because you did not originally follow proper instructions does not guarantee damage has been done. The usual problem we see from overtorquing fasteners is a shortened lifespan (when a problem actually arises).
