2001 Ford F-150 Pick-up Other - Fuel System

Question: My check engine lite comes on. I had the dealer check it out and they said my fuel filler neck is cracked. I can see the crack right at the opening so my system is not sealed properly. I want to change it, but dealer cost is over $400. Can I just change out the metal portion of the filler neck. I see that it goes to the top of the tank and can see the rubber hose and clamp. Or do I need to bite the bullet and have the whole thing changed. Was considering a junk yard also.... Help!

Technican: I would try a junkyard, a 2001 should have little deteriation from time. Does the dealer want to replace the tank? How thick is the crack?
Owner: They say they need to lower the tank to change the filler neck. Like I said I can see the crack at the cap location. It is about 1/2" log from the edge down toward the tank. Seems like someone pressed down too hard when filling the tank. NJ has law where gas must be pumped by service station attendant so it could have been rough treatment. To be clear, you think I can get by with changing the metal filler neck from the body to where it joins into the rubber hose on top of the tank? Seems simple enough to me. I'll get practice removing it at the junk yard before I start on my own vehicle. That is if they have one for my year and model. Is the filler neck common to other year models of the F-150?
Owner: Hello, I've re-opened this question at the customer's request.
Technican: Thanks Mark! Please give more information on your truck. 2001 F150 Engine? 4WD? Etc.
Owner: Douglas, It is a F-150 Styleside (Stepside is my term). Year 2001, Built 10/2000 Extended Cab two short doors for extended area entry 4x4 4.6 liter V8 78K miles If I missed anything let me know. Ed
Technican: I believe 99-03 will work, not sure which bed lengths (or w/b) work other than yours. It is not a common product so determining intechangeability is difficult. I am still trying to find more information.
Owner: I definetely do not have a short bed. The length is over 7'. I'm almost wondering if I couldn't just take the existing one out and go have the end repaired at a welding shop. That's probably too "shade tree" for these computer driven vehicles!
Technican: All it has to do is be capable of holding a small amount of pressure and obviously fuel proof. There are epoxy products I've seen work to fix similar problems (they work as well as the artist that applies them). I wouldn't recommend epoxy or welding to fix the problem when rust is the real problem (that is when it doesn't help long), assuming this is clean material I see nothing wrong with trying cold weld or convential welding. While looking for interchange data, I ran across some prices. The prices were in the $125-135 range. If you are interested in a link to these leave your email address.
Owner: Very good ideas. being that the crack is at the very tip of the opening I'd be concerned if the epoxy did fail of it getting in the tank and leading to other problems. I'll take a look at the links if you would please forward. Would you care to see a digital picture of the culprit? I appreciate all your time and effort in this. I guess dealerships have a tough time winning over customers with the bad apples out there. Some sterotypes are hard to shake! Ed
Technican: They are always wanting to handle big money. It's beyond out of control. Yes, please send a picture. Email sent to '2001 Ford' in subject line.
