1986 Ford F-250 Pick-up Malfunction - Drive Train & Driveline

Question: Hello-- My Ford is being used as a plowtruck. My transmission has WAYS been seviced well. The problem started occuring when we had a LOT of snow and I overheated the transmission. I noticed it was taking a few seconds to engage when switching gears. So I stopped immediately. After cooling, I noticed that it was taking a LONG time to engage into Reverse. Then---I added a quart of Type F Transmission fluid--because it was not showing any good signs of where the level was at I figured (possibly fatally) that I would add a quart. After that I cannot even get the transmission to engage AT L. Not even a hint. Did I add too much? Could it be electrical, because also what happened (BEFORE the transmission went out) is that I couldn't start the engine because I couldn't get the Auto transmission into either PARK or NEUTR to start it---so I have been buypassing the solenoid?? Could THAT have something to do with it?? Robert

Technican: Robert, you have a couple of problems and let me start with normally even a trash tranny will have reverse (do to the lack of use). When was the last time you had a new filter and flush done?? also a linkage adjustment should fix the starter issue. I agree with you that it might be electric, except that you said the tranny was sluggish between gears (a sure sign of low fluid or dirty filter). Lets start here with a new filter and fluids and see what happens. I am sure any tranny shop will try to sell you a rebuilt tranny for about 2000. Let me know. Al
Owner: Al---- THE LAST TIME I HAD A COMPLETE TRANNY FLUSH WAS ABOUT 250 MILES AGO. WHICH IS ACTULY QUITE A LOT SEEING AS HOW THE TRUCK IS USED 50% OF THE TIME FOR PLOWING. SO I DO KEEP THE TRANNY IN GOOD SHAPE. I DO NOT THINK THAT THE TRANNY IS SERIOUSLY IN BAD SHAPE. AND I AGREE WITH YOU---I WILL FIRST TRY A FLUSH AND A NEW FILTER AND WE WILL GO FROM THERE. THANK YOU---I'LL PAY YOU THE $10.00 LET ME KNOW SO IF YOU THINK THERE IS ANYTHING ELSE I CAN DO. I'D APPRECIATE IT! ROBERT
Owner: Hello, I've re-opened this question at the customer's request. site admin.
Technican: Not sure how the question got closed but you did leave me with a "hanging" question. I think that you have a bad filter or the has gotten fully plugged. Give the flush and filter a shot go from there. Al
Technican: Did the filter change and flush help out. Let me know. Al
