Technican: Hello, What size engine? Gas or Diesel? Which "engine" light comes on" Temperature, Check engine?? Do you have diagnostic trouble codes being set in the computer? Is the engine overheating? Please advise.
Owner: 7.3 diesel> it is an engine light I don't know if it is the type of usual check engine variety or not. Temp gauge is erractic but the engine runs and drives well. A loose wire somewhere? or a bad gauge ?

Technican: I'll see what I can find for you.
Technican: Well, The "F" Series truck does not use an instrument voltage regulator. That leaves the sending unit (Coolant Temperature) on the engine and the gauge. The sending unit on the engine has a Red-Lt Blue wire that connects to it. Of course the sending unit will be screwed into a water passage on the engine intake manifold or the block. Yours might even be near the upper radiator hose connection to the thermostat housing. See if you can locate the sensor and verify the electrical connection to be clean and tight. Look at the path the wire takes for any bad spots in the insulation that could effect the signal by touching a bracket, linkage and so on. If electrical connection seems fine I'd try a new sensor before I'd fault the gauge itself. Is the coolant level full? How old is the thermostat? Do you get a steady gauge reading with key on and engine stopped? Your turn,
