1985 Ford Mustang GT Upgrade - Ignition System

Question: I swaped my duraspark 2 ignition for an MSD 6A. Now there's no juice. However, the battery is fine and all the new ignition module connections are fine. The module itself is fine as well. Where's the problem? With the MSD wiring there are some wires from the old set-up that are left unconnected, but according to MSD that's not the problem. Can you help me? Hope to hear from you soon, ~ Peter Vlaming, Williamsburg

Technican: Were the wires left disconnected for the new set up connected on the old one and if so, did the car fuction properly? If so, I would say that is your problem. Other than that, you might try doing a diagnostic scan to see if any trouble codes can be retrieved. The ECM may not be recieving the right information. Paul
Owner: Thank you for your quick reply. Yes, there were wires from the old set-up that are left unconnected. But if they are supposed to be connected, where do they go? According to the MSD schematic I've connected all the necessary wires. Once again, this is an upgrade from a duraspark 2 stock ignition to an MSD 6A. Please let me know.
Technican: Again, I ask if the vehicle functioned prior to the instalation of this upgrade? Are these the same wires left out from the original conection? Its a little difficult to decifer from this side of the screen. If the vehicle was running prior to this upgrade, and I take it this upgrade was to improve performance, there is a very good possibility the ECM is recieving an errant code. I have seen way too many times where an aftermarket distributor states their product is compatable with factory settings only to find that a reset of systems codes and sometimes even a new chip must be installed to decode the new part.Scan the system. Paul
Owner: The original problem that motivated me to change out the ICM was that the engine would backfire, then stall, and wouldn't restart until she cooled down again. I couldn't drive the car for more than 10 minutes at a time. So, yes, she did run - so-to-speak. But now, of course, there's no power whatsoever.
Technican: O.K. you say it would run but you were getting a backfire and eventual engine suht down. You now state there is no power at all.I'm going to take that as if you are not getting any spark when the engine is cranking. The backfire could be from a number of things starting from the timing, the intake, the exhaust(O2 sensor, catylitic convetor), MAF sensor, TPS sensor fuel induction etc. Have the vehicle scanned. There are some parts houses offering this service free or at a nominal charge(Pep Boys, Auto Zone). If you have already done so and no systems codes were retrieved, then my friend, I'm scratching my head as hard as you are. Paul
Owner: Thank you, Paul! I'll have it checked out. Once I get the ignition going I may get back to you if I still have the stalling problem.
Technican: I hope you have some luck with the scanning. Just make sure if a code is retrieved to follow the flow chart all the way through to make sure the problem is pinpointed without throwing a bunch of parts at it. Paul
