1991 Ford Mustang GT Won't Start - Fuel System

Question: I purchased a 91 Mustang GT convertible today, It was last tagged in 1997, and probably not started since 1999 or 2000. I removed the air cleaner tube and sprayed engine starter in the opening. It started and purred like a kitten. Gas is in liquid form in tank, it does smell like varnish a bit. It doesn't seem to have fuel pressure to engine. I checked the fuel safety switch in the trunk--its in the down position. I figure the fuel pump is in the tank? Should there be gas in spraying when I press the accelerator peddal near the air in take near engine/efi/carb? Is it a fuel injection system? How do I check the fuel pump for proper operation? Would you drop the tank and pour all old gas out to ensure a completely clean tank? I did replace the fuel filter near the tank. Thanks. Jeff

Technican: It is a fuel injected engine. You should not see any gas. The part with the butterfly valve is called a throttle body. If you look below the upper part of the intake (the plenum, which is also the part that the big air intake tube from the air filter goes to)you will see a fuel rail with 8 injectors ( four on each side) attached to it going into the topside of the lower intake. On one of the ends of the fuel rail you should see what looks like a valve stem cap or a a schrader valve ( like a tire valve), that would be where you check fuel pressure( with a fuel pressure gauge) you should have around 45 psi of fuel pressure. And yes I would drop the tank if there is more than a 1/8 tank of gas and empty it out.If less than 1/8 tank use fuel additive to help clean remaining fuel with fill up. If you should find that your fuel pump is bad than you would have to drop the tank to replace it. If I can help you further you can contact me directly at upon acceptance of this response.. Owner: Thanks for the reply, I sort of figured it was fuel injected, but you put me on the right path. Thanks for telling me how to check the fuel pressure. I wish the car was in the garage, but its 180 miles away. My last question was how do I check the fuel pump for actual operation--where can I hotwire in near the battery to actually hear it run? Thanks. Jeff
Technican: Jeff there should be a small red wire near the master cylinder that you can run 12 volts to. otherwise you should be able to hear a humm from the fuel tank with the key on... also if you can get to it you can depress the schrader valve where you check fuel pressure with the key on to see if your pump is working... now keep in mind that your pump can show that it is working by doing these visual checks but still might not be making enough fuel pressure ( a weak pump)... Best thing to do is check the actual fuel pressure at the valve with an inexpensive fuel pressure gauge from your parts store.
