1992 Ford Mustang GT Malfunction - Electrical & Lighting Systems

Question: All of a sudden, my turn signal will not work. Before it would be intermittent when I would have to move the arm back and forth a couple of times before it would initiate the signal. I think that it's gone now and may be wiring. The fuse that it points to in the manual controls the backup lights as well and they are working so it's not the fuse. Could it be wiring in the steering column?

Technican: Your fax has been sent.
Technican: Hello, From what you describe it is likely a bad turn signal switch inside the steering column because jiggling the lever would cause the signals to work. You may also want to consider the signal flasher unit under the dash. It may have quit. But wiggling the turn lever would not really be expected to have an effect on a flasher unit going bad. Both are possibilities. Your thoughts?,
Owner: I will try that this evening or this weekend and let you know. Can I buy the flasher seperately that goes in the fuse box and replace it? That is the one that you are speaking about, right? Thanks
Technican: The flasher that is in the fuse box will be the 4-way emergency light flasher unit. It is there as the 4-way feature is designed to work with the key OFF. I'll find out where the signal flasher is located and get back to you. It will likely be on a bracket near the steering column and I'll try to verify that for you.
Technican: I spoke with the Ford Dealer parts counter people and they inform me that the flasher is indeed in the fuse box! Let me know what happens, won't you?
Owner: Hello again . I purchased an electronic one and put it in there and nothing when I turned on the signals. When I hit the emergency flasher, it worked. Is there such a thing as a dual function flasher that handles both turn and 4-way? I am pretty stumped now. I have the manual but it only tells me about that one round flasher in the fuse block. Thanks
Technican: Time for me to get to the auto repair data base at the public library and see what is going on here. I'll be looking for a wiring diagram so I can advise you which wire supplies power to the turn signal switch. Do you have a fax number? Will a cover sheet be needed?
Owner: You can fax the info to 7066602670. Please add a cover sheet to the attention of Thomas Johnson. Thanks
Technican: I'll send you a fax. The graphics show the turn signal flasher to be behind the right center of the dash. It has one (two-wire) connector that plugs into it. The wire colors are one Purple-Orange and one Light Blue wires. The hazard light flasher is still shown to be in the fuse box up under the left side of the dash. My source is the Mitchell 1 Auto Repair Data Base 2004, Mitchell Repair Information Co., LLC. I must drive back home to send the fax to you. I'll make a cover sheet for you as requested. Should you need to replace the Multi-Function Switch on the steering column, I'll include info on the replacement as well.
Owner: Received fax. Very detailed information that was sent. I took a look at it at lunch and couldn't easily get my hand on it. I will look for the turn signal flasher, hopefully without tearing the dash out this evening. Thanks
Technican: I'll look forward to a positive result.
Owner: Well, . I think that we have done it. As I felt around under the right side of the center console, I wondered what was behind the glove box. Since the illustration looked as if it was deep above the center console. As I opened the glove box completely, where the box dropped down... "voila", there it was. Directly behind the box and to the left. I swapped the old one out with the new electronic flasher and it works a lot faster and quieter. Thanks a lot for the help.
