Technican: "Hello, When changing gears there are synchronizers that match the speed of the gears about to be meshed for a smooth shift. When mechanical synchronization fails the gears will grind. I believe this is what is happening in your transmission.
Parts come from several makers but to ensure quality control I recommend genuine Ford replacement parts.
The best breakdown, inspection, repair, and reassembly instructions I know of are in a 1995 Ford Shop Repair Manual. The manual is pricey. If your car is a "keeper" it is worth the investment.

A local national auto parts chain store may have a decent CD version of a manual by Chilton (or similar vender), but Helm, Inc. writes the factory manuals.
