1998 Ford Mustang GT Chugging - Drive Train & Driveline

Question: my 1998 stang gt . when i press the brakes to stop my aod transmission has a heavy downshfit right before it comes to a stop, like a clunking noise. i thought it was the limited slip so i had it replaced and it still makes a clunking noise. i had the rear end checkd and it was fine. the u joints also. it only clunks when i press on the brakes before i stop. i let go of the gas and let it slow down by itself and it has a little clunk noise. pleae help

Technican: Hello, Do you have a similar "clunk" feel when you start moving from a full stop? I'm wondering if the driveshaft moves without binding when the rear suspension moves up/down. When the suspension moves the length of the driveshaft telescopes longer/shorter on a splined yoke that is usually covered by a rubber flex boot. A second thought is that when the brakes are applied the torque converter clutch is signaled to disengage. The clutch control solenoid may have a problem dumping the "apply pressure". Does your engine seem to bog down with the braking and then act correctly the instant you feel the clunk you describe? I'm trying to discover if the problem is inside the transmission, the driveline, or the engine/transmission mounts. What happens if you shift to neutral and then brake to a stop? Try this test: While driving normally and after the transmission has complted all upshifts, can you see an increase in engine rpm if you apply the brake very lightly using your left foot (just enough to turn on the brake lights) without letting up on the accelerator? This would tell you if the torque converter clutch releases properly. When you release the brake pedal the clutch should re-engage and the rpm's go back down. My Ford truck lets me turn off the overdrive by pushing a button. If you have this feature too, does it make a difference concerning the clunk? Please advise.
