2002 Ford Mustang GT Other - Electrical & Lighting Systems

Question: i put long tube hedders and a short h pipe with high flow converters on my mustang the sound was just what we were looking for everything was great for about two weeks then we started to hear a knocking sound at idle it sounded like it was coming from the engine we narrowed it down to the conveter on the passanger side the honey comb had come a lose and was rattling around inside to make long story short the muffler shop would have put on a new converter for a 140.00 that was not in our budget because we had already spent 800.00 on the exhaust already the cheapest and easiest way at the time was to gut out the converters we did not think about the service engine light coming on so we purchased a eliminator set. and installed them on the oxygen senors the check service engine light went off for awhile and it came back on and stays on all the time but the instructins did say to disconnect the negitive side of the battery we forgot to disconnect it did we cause this problem by not diconnecting the negtive side of the battery before installing the eliminators and we also that it might be the hollowed out converters its causing the car to run rich and burn more fuel we have ran out of soulitions of what it could be now we need a expert thank you

Technican: Hello, Have you disconnected the battery to clear the code? Have you read the codes? What are they? Same ones? Have you shopped for salvage/used converters to save money?
Owner: when you say disconnect the battery do you mean the postive and negitive we did diconnect the negitive side and it did the same thing we were told that if you diconnect both postive and negitive the key remote would have to be reset by the dealer we dont know if there any truth to that. as long as the gutted out converters is not causing the problem we are not going to replace them.if the service engine light is on how do reprogram it to go back off thank you
Technican: Disconnecting the battery negative cable connection for about 30 seconds should do the trick. Any current codes that are turning on the "Check Engine" light should clear. I've never heard of consequence with the keyless entry should both battery connections be disconnected. That would mean you couldn't buy a battery where ever you choose. If the check engine light does not go off on engine restart, there is a "hard code" set that needs to be addressed. If the engine runs for a time and then the check engine light comes back, there is still a condition that fails to meet emissions standards. You'll want to decide what you are comfortable with. Codes can be read for you if you do not have access to a code reader. National chain auto parts stores often do this for free. But they will not clear the codes for liability issues/reasons that their policies forbid such risk. Disconnecting the battery yourself will be fine for clearing codes.
