1966 Ford Mustang Making Noise - Engine

Question: I put a new flexplate and starter in the car and when you try to start it, it is very loud. The bendix does not seem to want to come out. The trans is a C-4 out of a 70 Maveric. I have installed 3 new flexplates and 2 starters and they all do the same thing. The noise is very loud and of a grinding type. There is a spacer plate between the engine & teans and it is on. What do I do?

Technican: Hi; Is this a spacer or adapter plate? If adapter plate, most likely you will have to get a special starter for you application. Also you might want to check on a torque induction stater. Another trick if it is a spacer is to take the starter mounting holes and oblong them with a round file so that the starter will drop down a little more as to clear the flex plate..
Owner: The plate between the engine and trans is a factory installed item and is in the parts books. I have done the oblong hole to the point that the gear teeth almost would slip. I have done all this with and without the spacer it makes no differance. I have had the trans in and out a bunch of times trying everything. The noise is so loud you can tell the starter and flex plate will not last..
Technican: Hi; Try adding shims to the starter to pull it away from the block. Sometimes the starter will travel too far and hit the flexplate..
Owner: My fault! I should have noted that I have tried to shim the starter back from the bellhousing/flywheel. I fact I have also shimmed between the flexplate and the crankshaft to move the flexplate away from the starter. Nothing seems to make any differance.
Technican: Hi: According to some research I did they make two different flexplates for that model. They make a 157 tooth and a 164 tooth. The starter is different for them. See what yours is and check with your parts store to see if they show the difference.
Owner: Acording to NAPA, Auto Zone, Car Quest, Colorado Mustang Specialties, And National Parts Depot the 157 tooth is for the 289 / 302 cid engines. The 164 will fit the 1969 6 cyl and the 351-c, w, cj ect. The 164 tooth will not bolt to the 289/302 crankshaft. The 157 tooth is 13.3" OD, and the 164 tooth is 14.23" OD. The 164 tooth is not an option. Please don't give up, there has to be an answer.
Technican: Hi; I have been thinking about this. Try going to a different starter. It can be that the starter you are getting are not right. There is a difference between a manual and an automatic. Research that and let me know. I'm not giving up on helping you. Any questions either email me or call me at 850-902-2231. Thanks.
Owner: I went to Car Quest Auto Parts Store to get another starter and to see if there is any differant starters that would even bolt to the bellhousing. There are not any starters other than the one I have that will fit this application. In the past I have been dealing with the owner of the parts store. This time I went in and the owner was at lunch. I told the counter man what I was up against, he got the starter from the shelf that I already have and a differant bendix. He showed me that starters from all the reman shops have a 9 tooth starter drive (bendix) and that if you replace the 9 tooth with a 10 tooth the fact that the dia. of the 9 & 10 tooth are the same, the 10 tooth gear is a little smaller than the 9 tooth. I purched the 10 tooth bendix and are in the process of trying it out and will let you know if the counter man had the answer or not. thanks for trying and I will be in touch.
Technican: Hi; Glad to hear from you. But it sounds like you are in the right path. I've been doing auto mechanics for 20+ Years. Sometime it is hard to troubleshoot the problem unless I'm there. Sorry about the late response.I use to work for a Ford dealership. Still got friends there. That's why I tell you that I can research It. I'm a mechanic not a parts person.Sorry for the delay response. Keep in touch.
Technican: Hi; Have not heard from you. Have you tried anything different? Please advice..
