1966 Ford Mustang Won't Start - Engine
Question: My car will start while holding the key on start, but when key goes back to the run position it quits. I have changed the starter solenoid on the fender well, also the ignition switch and coil. The engine is a 289 with a Holley 4 barrel carb. It has always ran fine. Just parked it in the garage and now won't start.

Technican: Hi,
I believe your Mustang has an electrical problem. The ignition coil receives power from 2 different sources. One is direct through the key when the key is in the sart position. The other is when the key is in the run position and is fed through a ballast resistor. Likely you have a bad ballast resistor, (made of ceramic). It is a simple replacement. To test, check for power at the coil when the key is on. If it is is not, or is weak, then you need to find where the power has been lost, likely the resistor or a wire between the key and the coil. Owner: Thanks for the quick response, I will check into that soon and get back with you. I was going to have to make sure about the ballast resistor anyway. Was in the process of upgrading to a Mallory Unilite which requires the ballast resistor. And another thought, I had left the key switch on, not to long ago, the battery ran down, but charged it up and it started OK. Had read somewhere about a fuse link that would burn if key was left on. Down know where to look on that one.
Thanks. Technican: I do not believe the link would burn on a simple dead battery and restart. Only if the cables were hooked up backwards or you were boosting another car. Here's How To Get Guaranteed Solutions In Minutes
