1984 Ford Mustang Won't Start - Ignition System
Question: My Mustang just quit going down the road; the engine cranks but has no spark. The ignition switch, module, and coil have recently been replaced. The connections to the module and coil are okay. The harness terminals show #1 at 4 volts and #2 and #3 at 12.4 volts with key in run position. Where is my problem?

Technican: Two things come to mind. There is a 'pick-up' coil inside the distributor. It has two wires that I believe connect to the dist. module. A reluctor ring spins with the dist. shaft and causes a break in magnetic field. When this occurs, the module signals the coil, the coil fires, and the rotor bug directs the spark to the pole in the dist. cap and down the plug wire...
#1 You may have a bad pick-up coil...the dist. has to come out to replace a pick-up coil. A good p/u coil ohms out @ 500-800 ohms and is disconnected when tested.
#2 Check the button in the dist. cap that touches the rotor bug terminal (center) when the cap is installed. If these parts don't make proper contact, the coil spark stops right there.
A sudden failure like you've had makes me also want to pull the module for testing too. Lots of parts stores have a tester for this.
