1988 Ford Mustang Malfunction - Electrical & Lighting Systems
Question: JUst purchased a used 1988 Mustang. New engine with appx 1800 miles on it. On the third day of driving while out running around, the engine would not restart. Was able to jump start the engine, got it moving, allowed engine to idle and then it stalled. Would not restart from jumper cables. Re-started by rolling and dropping the clutch. On teh way home smoke started coming out from under the dash. Got home and turned off. Checked wiring that was exposed and found no problems. Tried to restart yesterday, after replacing the starter. While turning the key, no click or attempt to start occurred. Smoke from under the dash returned. Currently pulling the dash to look at wiring. Any thoughts or ideas on where to start to diagnose the problem?

Technican: Check the ignition switch. There was a recall for that year car. The switch had terminals that were too close and could start a fire. See if recall work was performed(a sticker under the hood). If not, check with a Ford dealer. Also, check for a short under the dash. A simple compass can be used. Run the compass along the wire and watch for a deflection of the arrow. There is the short. Try the switch first though. .
