1996 Ford Mustang Making Noise - General

Question: I have a 1996 mustang with 158, 000 miles. (Love that car!) Has a high pitch squealing especially when idling and low mph, eases off some when pick up speed. Have replaced the belt twice since this has been squealing (over a year), the bearings in the alternater, and now a water pump. Still squealing. Have had 3 life-long mechanics look at it and they are all stumped. One thinks it might be coming from the inside front of the engine. (Yikes!) don't want to tear into that when not for sure! Just not sure what to check next.... Help! At just over 50, 000 miles the gasket blew between engine and radiater, lost all coolant, blew the engine. Ford replaced engine, radiater, oil pan, etc. with an adjusted price for me. later a recall came for that faulty gasket and they refunded my expense.(a little history for ya.) Help! Denise

Technican: I know that you dont want to hear this but it sounds like a belt is bad. To verify this take a can of wd 40 and lightly spray one belt at a time while the car engine is idling. If the squeal goes away then look for what is driven by that belt. You may have a Tensioner pulley that has a bearing that is failing or you may have a component that was installed just a little out of alignment and is causing a problem with the belts.. causing the belts to fail early. Give this a try and we can go from there.
Technican: Hello, What engine do you have, please? Has anyone tried removing the belt and then starting the engine to see if the sound is still present? If it is still present you can look/think in the area of the crankshaft pulley. If no fault is found there, a mechanics "stethescope" will help you find where the noise is coming from. If the noise is gone, you can suspect each component turned by the belt when the engine runs. Is there anything you note besides an increase in vehicle speed that will effect this noise? (turning something on/off, changing engine speed without changing vehicle speed) Please advise.
Owner: Engine: 3.8, V-6. The mechanic removed the belt, noise still there. Used the Stethescope, he suspects that the noise is coming from the external oil pump, driven at the front of the engine. Is this possible? Oil pressure, fine. squealing for approx 18 months/ 30, 000 miles. (I keep my car on the road!)
Owner: Oh, also have replace the idlers and the tensioner (twice). It's such a mystery to not only ME but to two mechanics. Help!
Technican: Yes, it is possible that the noise (squeel) is caused by the external oil pump. However, if one could hear the sound through the stethescope and only suspect the pump, I wonder why it is not definitive? Does the mechanic hesitate due to what you have been through that has not fixed the problem? It can't be all that expensive for this pump and good pressure doesn't always mean "no defect". I'm going to see if there are any Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) that apply here when I can reach my contacts tomorrow the 12th.
Owner: looking forward to your inquiry. Denise
Technican: Please forgive the delay, I took my wife to the doctor today and it blew my chances of doing anything else I'd hoped to. More as soon as I can..
Owner: Hey, thanks for the note. Take care of the wife! ;)This is not a new problem (car still gets me where I need to go. HA!) just looking forward to solving the mystery and quieten the little stang down. HA! Thanks again for your time and effort. Denise
Technican: There are no TSBs in the Mitchell 1 Auto Repair Data Base relative to oil pump noise. I spoke to a Ford Master Tech (30yrs exp) and he said he has not heard of and oil pump squealing but if a stethescope found the pump to be noisey he'd change it. Your call! I wish I could be there to hear the noise and troubleshoot it for you. I also thought about the crankshaft pulley seal in the front cover as a possibility. The harmonic balancer would have to come off for a look for a wear pattern or a shot of lube. Do you choose to have the oil pump replaced? The tech that heard the noise should provide a recommendation...
Owner: Hi, been out of town for a few days. Car still acting the same. still a challenge to find the problem. you have helped point out several things to look at and I appreciate your advice. Was wondering how I can contact you in the future. Thanks! Denise
Owner: I will be clicking to send your money as soon as you reply about future advise. Thanks! Denise
Technican: has a policy not to reveal our personal email, phone#, etc. Going through is the only way I get paid and I'm sure they want clients to use their site to contact providers. (Keeps them in the loop) To request me personally to help you again, write to ( Site Administrator) and request that he "assign" your next question to me and I believe he will. Will that work for you? What will?
Owner: That sounds great. I'm new here and just not sure about the routine. :) Just didn't want to go through several yucko's ;). I intend to keep this little 'stang for a while yet and since she's getting older, she's gonna needs more TLC. Fiance' is a mechanic but mostly into old flatheads, etc. not as familiar with newer cars. Thanks again !!!! I'm sure we'll be chatting again real soon. :) Denise
Technican: Thank you Denise. I hope to be here. I have fun doing this. It's not about the money so much as the challenge. I don't know it all and learn with every question but even I have stumbled a time or two!
Technican: Denise, Do you need to leave this question open but inactive? Did we finish?
Owner: Well, the dog gone thing is still squealing. Any added tips, ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Guess we could just leave itopending should you come across something that might help. Put approx 500 miles on it just this week and still.... sounds like a guiena is under the hood. ;) sometimes when it's cold it really sounds horrible and then..... seems to settle down and only squack a nice generous amount. seems to be no rhyme or reason to this noise..... Exasperated Denise.
Technican: Did you replace the pump? I remember asking "do you choose to replace this pump"? I don't remember your answer! I've reread the dialog and I don't see your answer.
Technican: Denise, is there reason to hold this question open this long? Please let me know,
Owner: Hello, I think I'm just going to have to weather this one out till more symptoms pop up. I appreciate all of your help. Denise
Technican: Did you replace the pump? Would you prefer to write to, Site Administrator, .com and request a refund? Your turn,
Owner: Hey, No need for me to request a refund. You've been very patient throughout this question. No, I did not replace the pump. The Mechanic felt the problem was not coming from it. I have learned a lot about what it is NOT and eventually the RE problem culprit will come forth. I would like to stay in contact with you off and on till eventually this problem is solved. Guess right now I'm just waiting for the next tip from this little Stang. :) Thank you so much for your information and wisdom. I feel I will need your help again soon. Denise
Technican: I haven't really given you the answer to your question and I won't be offended if you do request a refund. It's your call.
Owner: Hello, thanks very much for offering but I would prefer to just leave as is... I may be calling on you again real soon. Thanks again, Denise
Technican: Hello, Still need help here?
