1993 Ford Probe Won't Start - General

Question: I have a 1993 Probe GT 5-speed manual. I was driving home from the gas station the other day, and the car began to stall when given a lot of gas. This continued for 2 miles until I was a block away from my house. The car died. The fuel cut-off light came on. The car tries to turn over when starting, but doesn't. After taken to a shop, the distributer is not putting out fire to the spark plugs. The distributor was replaced and the computer was replaced, the car is still not starting. The timing belt was also checked. Is it time for a new car??? Any help would be appreciated in this matter...Jason

Technican: Is there fuel pressure? Can you hear the fuel pump run for a couple seconds when you first turn the key on (as it normally does)? Sure sounds like the shop did some mis-diagnosis. Or at the very least inadequate diagnosis, two major components replaced and still no start. Did the same shop perform all the work?
Owner: The same guy tried both new parts. I have not checked to see if the fuel pump runs prior to the start. Would that prevent the distributor from firing to the spark plugs?
Technican: Is there battery power to the ignition coil? Has the coil itself been tested? Has the crankshaft sensor been ruled out? Does the shop have an information system for this car. One that gives them step by step instructions, specifications, service bulletins, wiring diagrams, etc If not, you need someone working on your car that does. If you or the current shop needs this information, it is available from alldata.com It cost 20 or 25 dollars for a one year subscription for one car. Additional subscriptions come at a discount. This should prevent good parts from being replaced. The only times I've heard of the distributor, computer, and (another part) going bad at the same is in the instances of fire or flood. Are they still going to charge you for the computer and distibutor if nothing was wrong with them?
Owner: He has the alldata service. He said that he tested the coil and the sensor, and they were good. He won't charge me for the parts if that is not what's wrong. When I tried to start it after it died, you could hear a winding noise, for about a second or two, after I let go of the key. I thought it may have to do with the fuel pump relay. Would this prevent the distributor from sending fire to the plugs?? I have never had this problem before and the fuel cutoff light has never came on. The car has about 110, 000 miles on it.
Technican: Hello, It amazes me after all the posted dialog that no one has asked what engine you have. What engine do you have? Whether or not you have fuel pressure shouldn't effect whether or not you have spark. I'm looking into the fuel cutoff to see if it can interrupt spark and fuel, or just fuel. Have you reset the cutoff switch?
Owner: The car has a V6 engine. I told the mechanic to check the switch, but I'm not sure if he has yet. He doesn't work on the weekend. I will check with him tomorrow. Any other suggestions if that's not it?
Technican: I'll be able to access the Mitchell 1 Auto Repair Data Base tomorrow afternoon. After I have researched your question there I hope to offer better input. I'll not guess. I'll not quit. I want to help.
Owner: I appreciate it.
Technican: My next door neighbor had car trouble so we went to the city for parts late this afternoon. That gave me opportunity to get your speaker wiring schematic too. Hope it is what you need.
Technican: OOPS! Disregard the last message. It was for another case I am working on...I'm sorry. On your car I remember you stated you have a V6 engine and the data base talked about different V6 engines and their respective ignition systems. Do you have a FAX number I can send you the SPARK OUTPUT CHECK? Do I need a cover sheet?
Owner: No cover (812)466-5412. I appreciate your time.
