1993 Ford Probe Won't Start - Ignition System

Question: Car's been running fine up until today. Recently replaced all the plugs and wires for NEW ones replacing the originals. This morning car started in the garage and as I was pulling out and quit before the car got 1/2 way out of the garage. Tried to restart and it will not turn over. It tries and tries and tries and will not catch. Full tank of gas. Previous days started fine. Opened hood, noticed caroded battery cable and cleaned with baking soda and water. No clue why it won't start. Fuel filter? Appreciate any help. Julie

Technican: It could be the filter. But first of all does the fuel pump run when you first turn the key on and during engine cranking? The fuel pump is in the gas tank a makes a humming noise.
Owner: Is this a humming sound I will hear over the starting sound?
Owner: Just went and tried starting again - no humming sound detected - just the sound of the ignition trying to turn over the engine. Does that mean fuel pump with if humming sound? If so, how much does a fuel pump run??
Owner: Am I to assume if no humming sound when starting the car, then fuel pump is out??? I'm waiting for your response.
Technican: Hello, I've re-opened this question at the customer's request.
Owner: Thank you!! I gave up when I never heard anything back.
Technican: I'm not the original responder to the question but it appears the person who did may have started you in the right direction. If what I have read is correct, you are getting no sound coming from the rear where your fuel pump is located. It's not nessesrary to try and start the vehicle to engage the pump. Just turn the ignition to the start position. Its' much easier to hear without the noise of the engine cranking. If there is no hum, it may be possible the pump is out but I would not automaticly rule that as the fix for your situation. The power to the pump needs to be tested. There is a posibility that when you had the work done, a harness may have been jarred or left loose causing an intermitant electrical flow to the pump or sensors related to it. Also check the fuel pump relay and you fuses. The relay should be in the black box in the engine compartment while the fuse is located under the dash. check your owners manual for exact locations under fuses. This may save you from having to have the gas tank dropped to change out the pump if the problem lies in one of these areas. Paul
Owner: THANK YOU so much for the reply. I feel like I got my money's worth from this site with the last technical response and THANK YOU Mark for re-opening my question to other mechanics. I sooooooooo appreciate your help and the technical help you provided. I ended up having my car towed (free with AAA and only 1 mile distance) a few hours ago to a shop close by and since they are also the ones who did the previous work of new plugs and wires - if something got jarred (as the last mechanic suggested as a possibility) when they replaced the plugs and wires - I'm sure they'll pick up on that - they are very good people. And also if its the fuel pump - then its the fuel pump. This was the 1st time I logged onto your site and I am definitely satisfied with your technical expertise. Thank you again!!! Julie
