1995 Ford Probe Making Noise - Engine

Question: Engine has 80K miles on it. Makes tapping noise when cold, but the sound goes away after about 10 minutes. Recently though, tapping can still be heard very slightly. Don't think it is a valve-tap. Could it be a cracked manifold or manifold studs? Thanks.

Technican: Sounds exactly like valve lifters.. Recommend an oil flush and oil change. Stick to changing your oil at 5000 miles or less. I do not recommend changing to synthetic oil.. your ticking should clear up. Let me know.
Owner: Thanks for the information. Few follow-ups though, is the valve train noise bad for the engine? why not synthetic and what 10w-30 or 5w-30? Thanks again.
Technican: The noise is not bad for the engine, comes with the age.. the hydraulic lifters are starting to have minor seepage internally and that is where your noise generates from. Think of this at 1200 rpm each cylinder has a valve open and close 20 times per second, this means a lifter has to pump up and gets compressed 20 times per second.. this is almost an idle speed. If you have run synth oil from the beginning stay with the synth. But changing to synth oil on an engine with some age will show lots of leaks... the synth oil has much better cleaning capabilities. Finally, I would go with either 10-30 or 10-40 depending on what the outside temps are (40 deg or lower I would go to the 10-30, higer I would run 10-40). Let me know if you need some more.
Owner: I put in synthetic 5W on my last oil change....thought it would get better flow for the winter. I guess I should change back to regular 10W-30 from now on, which I have used previously. Thanks again, Tom
Owner: From my last response, I forgot to ask what kind of engine flush you would advise using? There won't be a problem going back to regular oil from using synthetic?
