1987 Ford Ranger Pick-up Other - Ignition System
Question: When I hook up the positive wire to the battery, the starter engages and draws power from the battery and it stays on even when the iginition is off. The starter will not stop. I have replaced the solenoid and this is the 3rd starter since I first started having this problem.

Technican: Hello, What engine, please? Is you starter solenoid mounted on the fender apron? Do you find a wire plugged onto a terminal labeled "S"? If so, unplug this wire. Did the problem cease?
Please advise. Owner: The engine is a 2.9L. The iginition key switch is new. And I did unplug the wire from the "S" terminal and it still makes the starter turn over when we hook up the cable to the positive terminal. Basically it still does the same thing. Technican: The wire that goes to the "S" terminal is the voltage supply from the ignition switch that is hot when the key is turned to START. With this wire disconnected from the solenoid the solenoid should not be energized and the starter should not turn.
Are you confident the solenoid and starter are wired correctly? If so, the solenoid is shorted to voltage and should be replaced. You may have bought a defective part or perhaps the wrong one for your vehicle. Owner: This is the same problem that we have been having with it in the first place. We bought a new starter, it still happened, we bought a second starter, it still happened, we bought a 3rd starter and it still happened, we bought a new ignition switch and still had the same problem, then we bought the new solonoid and it is not exactly the same as the old one, it has one extra terminal. They said it should be just fine, don't use the extra terminal. We are still having the same problem that prompted us to buy the new starter in the first place. Do you know where we can find a wiring diagram? Technican: I'll sure try to get you a diagram. Will an email or a fax work best for you? Where to? Owner: Email works best form me. Technican: Sir, I need your email address as I am not an employee of in Canada. I am in Oklahoma, USA. Owner: Sorry about that. The email address you can send it to is Technican: Thank you, I'll get that coming to you. Technican: The ignition switch cannot factor here since the condition is the same with the "S" terminal wire from the ignition switch disconnected from the starter relay.
If this wire had voltage at all times then that would be a problem. If the voltage on this "S" terminal wire is switched on and off by turning the key to start and then to run then this circuit is working properly. Please send your replies through the site. Owner: The wiring diagram is hard to read but we are just trying to make sure we have it wired correctly. We still have the same problem of the starter starting when we hook up the battery to the wire on the solonoid. What else could be going on? Technican: Are you connecting the battery positive wire to the copper post on the relay closest to the front of the truck? The Cable that runs to the starter connects to the copper post on the relay closest to the firewall. When the key is turned to start the "S" wire gets power from the ignition switch to energize the relay.
If you have it connected this way and the starter turns with the key off then the relay is shorted to voltage and needs to be replaced. It is stuck in the energized mode. Owner: The way the part is positioned on the apron is the post with the S, for the switch is closest to the front. He is connecting the positive wire to the top copper terminal. There is a 4th terminal, opposite the S post. It has a "P". So you are saying that, it is that part that may now be defective? We just bought that part. Thank you for your patience and time! Technican: There should be only two terminals on the starter relay that are large in diameter. These are for the large battery cables.
One is closest to the front of the truck. The cable from the battery goes there.
The other is closest to the firewall. The cable to the starter goes there.
Connect the Red/Lt Blue wire from the ignition switch to the "S" terminal on the relay. Forget the "P" terminal on the starter relay.
If you wire the relay this way and the starter starts cranking when you connect the battery up then your new starter relay (the one you just bought) is stuck in the energized mode, is defective and needs to be replaced. Owner: Ok we have it all fixed now. I didn't realize he had the negative battery cable also connected to the solonoid so it was back feeding on itself. At least we did not need to buy more parts. Thanks again for your time and the problem is solved. Owner: One more thing. Duh! We should have seen it sooner. Thanks again. Technican: Thanks.
