1988 Ford Ranger Pick-up Won't Start - Engine
Question: Fuel injected 4-cylinder version. Will not start and stay running unless accelerator is on the floor and once it starts it needs to run at high rpm for a bit to keep running. It drives fine and idles fine. The problem is just at start-up. Makes no difference if it's cold or hot. I already changed the fuel filter, no difference.

Technican: Hi:
Sounds like your Idle Air Control Motor is varnished up. You can try this and it might work. Get the engine up to operating temp. Then disconnect the hose going to the throttle body. The intake hose. Get a can of throttle body cleaner and spray it into the throttle body while keeping it reved up. Use the whole can. After all done disconnect the wires going to the IAC motor. Idle the truck down until it sounds like it is going to die but won't. Disconnect the battery negative terminal and reconnect the plug to the IAC. Let sit for five minutes and then reconnect the battery. Start the truck and let idle for two minutes. Make sure no accessories are on A/C, etc. If automatic put in reverse and hold brake. If standard just let idle in neutral. It will start surging until the computer finds a happy medium. les. Here's How To Get Guaranteed Solutions In Minutes
