1997 Ford Ranger Pick-up Malfunction - Heating & Cooling System

Question: My heater now has only 3 settings... 1) OFF 2) MAX A/C 3) All other settings result in Heat!!!! Even the A/C setting that is not MAX A/C. All the appropriate redirection of the air flow works OK. That knob setting does direct the air flow where it says, ie. windshield, floor, dash or any of the combination settings, all work. It is the temp that is either HOT or COLD, and only cold in the MAX A/C position.

Owner: The temp control is electronic. There is no cable running from it, just two seperate connectors.
Owner: The center control knob (temp setting) does not have a control cable, just two connectors, one with 2 wires the other with 3.
Owner: ???????????????
Technican: Hi: As far as the problem you are having, you have to understand electronics. The problem can either be the switch or the controller. The sad thing about is that any troubleshooting manual will tell you if the part is suspected bad, replace with a "good known part".Most auto parts store will not let you return electronic parts after you have installed them. Unless you have a friend that has the same type of vehicle, then you are better off taking it to the dealer and have them troubleshoot it. The same controls werte use in the ranger and also the explorer. You might want to check your local salvage yard and see if they have one available. This would be a lot cheaper if they offer you pull deals. This will also kind of give you an input on how the system works. .
Owner: Les, Where is the control that this temp control runs? I looked under the hood but could not discern it. Art
Technican: Hi; The controller you are looking for is not underneath the hood. If you look at where your a/c and heater core lines come in at from outside. In the inside underneath the dash is what they call a blend door. Sometimes you might have to take the glove box out to see it. It should have a controller hooked on to it. But the more i think about this model. The control switch has two wire harness coming in and three wire harness going out. That tells me that the two wires are power coming in and the three wires are power going out. The switch acts like a reostat. Letting so much power out at a certain time telling the controller how much to open the blend door. I would check into getting a good known switch and trying that first.
Owner: Les, Had to buy a switch, $21, and still the same problem. Looking at the other end of these switches and can see the vac. switch open the door behind the glovebox so as to recirc the inside air thru the A/C, which it does. Move the control switch from MAX A/C to A/C, the door closes and in a few moments HOT air is comming out of the A/C vents. Since the A/C is running with the switch in this position, but HOT air is comming out of the vents, what is not working? I see a gray unit on top of the black housing behind the glove box with a connector with numerous wires. Is this the unit that should be moving some other door in that black housing?
Technican: Hi; I've been searching for an answer. It seems that your truck is equipped with a different style then mine. I will try to get some ford factory books this weekend and see what I can come up with. I need to get your email address so that I can scan some pages and email them to you. Sorry for the little delay. I will promise you that I will email you with some pictures or the answer to your problem. Ford has made so many different a/c systems that it ain't funny. I worked for a Ford dealership for 5 years. Trust me every year was different. Thanks
Owner: Les, My email is I don't want to put you thru a lot of trouble if the info is not readily available to you. Use your judgement on this. Art
Technican: Hi: I talked to a friend of mine at the Ford dealership. He is going to fax a parts breakdown. As soon as I get it I will email it to you with some more info. Thanks
Technican: Hi Art; That fax didd not come trough very cleared. I talked to him on the phone for about 30 minutes going through it. The only thing we could come up with is the blend door motor. This is located just about the center of the truck underneath the dash. If you look through your glovebox opening it will be on the left hand side on top of the plenum. The best way to check it out is take it loose from the door and see if this clears your problem. If it does the part he told me is $51.00. Try rhis and let me know. While mean time I will do a little more research. Sorry about the delay, but would hate to see anybody spend more money than they have to. Thanks
Owner: I will try that and let you know. I appreciate all the trouble you are going thru for this. Art
Technican: Hi; Did you try that?
